It’s a saucer magnolia, M. x soulangeana, which is a cross between M. denudata and M. liliiflora.

Gotcha. Makes me wonder if I’ve misidentified a few trees that I thought were saucer magnolias in the past- they were much larger than what you had photographed!

Going back to Carpinus for a second… Just planted a Carpinus in a street tree some along with some sweetbay magnolias. The New Belgium brewery is seen in the distance.
