Tree Improvement Specialist
The Morton Arboretum, an internationally recognized 1,700-acre outdoor museum with diverse woody plant collections, is seeking a qualified candidate for Tree Improvement Specialist. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is passionate about plants and interested in developing new plants, and introducing them into market.
The Tree Improvement Specialist will select and breed new plants that expand the palette of plants currently available in the green industry. Expectations include evaluating plants from Arboretum collections and other sources for their superior traits for possible introduction; and leading the Chicagoland Grows® Plant Introduction Program’s Woody Plant Committee to test and distribute plants to evaluation cooperators, and to determine the production feasibility of the plants. The Tree Improvement Specialist will work with the Manager of Plant Production to develop production methods for potential plant introductions, and produce trial quantities of plants. The qualified individual will participate in collecting expeditions to acquire new germplasm, and will work collaboratively with Arboretum and external academic researchers to test and evaluate newly developed plants. Expectations also include publishing plant evaluation results and communicate work initiatives to popular and trade audiences, and writing and proofreading copy for marketing materials to promote plant introductions.
Qualifications: A minimum Bachelor of Science in horticulture, botany, forestry, or related field, with a Master of Science preferred, and three to five years of practical experience. Excellent knowledge of woody plants that are native to the temperate regions of the world; keen and demonstrated interest in woody landscape plants and their introduction into the green industry; knowledge of woody plant breeding, propagation and production practices; and knowledge of basic disease and insect pest problems.
