Bessemer man killed in fall from tree at Vestavia Hills home

A Bessemer man was killed while removing a tree at a Vestavia Hills home.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Aaron Ligon McGarity. He was 36.

Authorities said Aaron McGarity was an employee of a company hired to remove a tree from a residential home in the 2800 block of Westwyck Circle in Vestavia Hills.

The accident happened at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday.

According to police and fire radio communications, McGarity was at the top of the tree when the tree top broke. He reportedly fell 40 to 50 feet onto the concrete below.

Medics arrived to find McGarity unresponsive. He was pronounced dead on the scene at 11:48 a.m.

The investigation is ongoing by Vestavia Hills Police.

"He fell up to 50 feet in a neighborhood."

The freak accident happened fast: Aaron McGarity, 36, was up in a tree on Westwyck Circle for a routine removal when the upper section gave way without any warning. He plummeted the height of a four-story building, hitting the concrete driveway below. First responders arrived within minutes, but it was too late; he was pronounced dead at the scene. Now, the Vestavia Hills police are digging into what caused the tree to fail on what should have been a normal workday. Friends remember McGarity as a dedicated family man with a strong work ethic and a knack for making people laugh, a stark contrast to the silent, violent end he met. The industry's inherent dangers are back in focus, highlighting how crews climb into treetops daily facing unpredictable risks. The official investigation continues, and the full story of what went wrong that Tuesday before noon remains unclear. We offer our sincere condolences to all who loved him.

It's always the easy days

I suppose we’ll never see the pics of the top or why it broke.

Anyway, poor bastard, RIP.
Do they really not show extensive pictures in cases like this? Do you think if it was blatantly obvious how the tree was going to fail people would get in trouble so it’s best to just label it at “failed with no warning” …?

I am probably most curious where the "no warning" statement came from... Was that something a reporter wrote because that's how they see it or it makes for a more catchy headline? Did a neighbor or homeowner say that? Or did another member of the crew who has been climbing trees for 37 years and is an instructor for tree risk assessment qualification make that statement? Or maybe another member of the crew that has been climbing really sketchy trees for 37 years and has been lucky so far???

Honestly, I have my doubts that "no warning" is factual. It is tragic that somebody lost their life. My hope would be that there is something to be learned... Somebody might reflect and realize that they missed a warning sign that was there rather than just going around saying there was no warning. Maybe there was no warning... But that is certainly the exception to the rule in any industrial accident in any industry.
