Toro Dingo Muffler Work-Around

I've got a TX425 that needs to have the muffler replaced. OEM Toro Part is about $250.00. The muffler has four nuts welded onto it that are intended to receive bolts which go through brackets welded onto the body, the retainer sleeve and into the nuts. It also has an inlet pipe with a flexible section that connects to the exhaust mainfold of the engine, but I'm guessing I can work around that with some off the rack stuff from the exhaust section of an auto parts store. I'm not a welder, but I wondered if anyone in here has been able to make a $50 tractor muffler of similar size work without losing the savings in machine shop/welding time. I'm attaching a link to an exploded parts diagram. The muffler is part 32.

Here's a link to a similar looking muffler I found.

Thanks for any ideas.

It sounds to me like a lot of time and effort to make it work; welding to a muffler is difficult because the steel is very thin, so if you don’t have a good quality mig or tig setup and know how to use it you’ll likely end up just making holes, which defeats the purpose of a new muffler.

Are the muffler dimensions the same, and the inlet and outlet pipes in exactly the same places on this as the factory muffler? If not, it may not work anyway, because these minis are so compact there’s not much room to fit anything extra in u set the hood.

Finally, in my experience, generic tractor mufflers are much louder than factory mufflers. Never bothered me on an old Farmall or IH pulling hayrides, but it sure got annoying on the backhoe at work!

Diameter of the inlet and outlet, as mentioned above, and the construction of internal baffles can affect air flow. More open and airflow is usually better than less.

My guess is that less noise means less power. But how much? Fractions of a HP is my take. For a dragster it might be important

Pipes and clamps will work just fine. No need to weld but that is nicer. Slather on some high heat anti seize to both mating surfaces

If the dimensions work for the $53 one I’d be on that right away
