Tension pulls on the rope cover

Location

Hey Folks,
I have been having trouble with splicing some double braid climbing lines with out causing a tention pull in the cover of the rope after or while i am running home the final bury.

I know what you are thinking i must have pulled the strand when i was doing the cover taper, but that is what I thought at first and have since been clamping the cover right at the taper mark with rubber coate flat vise grips to prevent pulling the strands back there.

The ropes i have been having this problem with are Tachyon and Yales Hedra.

Just in case you were wondering I use the manufacturer's specs for spliciing the ropes. Maybe some one can shed some light on this issue i am having

Thanks in advance

Re: Tension pulls on the cover strand

sorry i dont have a picture, but what i am attempting to describe is one strand/yarn of the cover is pulled under obviously more tension than the surronding strands/yarns. This make the rope feel consistantly bumpy from the throat of the eye down the rope 3-4'. in other words, one of the strands is sunken in tighter around the core and you can trace that strand all the way up to the eye.

Sorry i am terrible at being technically descriptive about splicing. I hope this makes sense...

Re: Tension pulls on the cover strand

When your burring the core inside the cover and then pulling the core tail out it sounds like you may be snagging the core with the fid when it is passing through the cover. If this is the case with a strand it will be locked in place and will bunch. You'll have to take your splice apart and start over and make sure that when you pull the core tail out through the cover that you can pull it back and forth. I'm sure Nick can explain better, but I think that's what's happening.

Re: Tension pulls on the cover strand

Hey thanks for the reply Inthetree
I think if that was the case I wouldn't be able to bury the splice all the way. I'm thinking it would stop were it was caught. Also it has been happening quite consistently for some reason in these two ropes.

Is it possible I'm putting too much tension on the eye/ crossover while doing the final bury. I have been trying a technique where I put tension on the eye/ crossover end with a mini 4:1 fiddle Block set and snug it up while I progressively bury the last few inches. Yet it does not happen every time. I seem to notice it when I first milk the bulk of the slack down toward the eye.

I have to be doing something wrong. Any other ideas?
