TCI Magazine Safety Glasses Article

I'm writing an article for TCI magazine on PPE eye wear for arborists and tree workers.

The article will be in the May issue. I would like to get some input from you guys as to what you like best for safety glasses and why.

I'm not going to include any reviews on really expensive glasses like Bolle or Wiley X, no matter how good they are, but still wouldn't mind hearing about them, if some of you guys wear them. I'm looking to review eye wear that the average arborist can afford.

Thanks,
Chris

I purchased a box of the regular 3m clear for my crew. About $2/pair from Treestuff. They are perfectly clear when new and seem to last. I also purchased a pair of Lexas just to see the difference. We have passed them around and so far, 3 of 4 prefer them to the 3m. They have lasted about a month of daily use so far. Not bad for $10.00

The Starlite Safety Glasses are far and above the best choice for several reasons.

1: Coverage, full wrap around coverage. Eyebrows to eye socket they do a great job of keeping dust and chips out.

2: Durability, they last a really long time

3: Safety they have the Z87+ rating

4: Price, at $2/ pair and cheaper you cant beat that with a stick.

5: One piece nose piece. Many glasses have glued on nose pieces that ultimately break off, Starlites are all one piece across the front which adds tons to durability and comfort.

6: Davey issues them to all their guys and does not allow any other eye ware to be used with exception of prescription.

They look good, feel good, last a long time, work well, and are cheap. Look no further.

A key point on the Starlites is over ear hearing pro gets the best seal due to the flattened arms. For this reason they cause much less discomfort than other glasses.

That and you can tie them in a knot. Durable, cheap, good coverage, every colour and shade you need. These things have been a hit in many industries.

I've been using them for about ten years with great success. Good selection of cool frames, reasonable prices, and good customer service.

I have to second the Oakley m frames. Don't really fog up and with interchangeable lens makes them nice. At my work we use dewalt safety glasses , not sure of the cost I think around 7 or 8 bucks. Pretty comfortable and work good with earmuffs on your helmet. Keith

Yeah, I have heard nothing but great things about the Oakley m frames, but there'll a little out of the price range for the average tree worker.

Still, they will be one of the glasses that I will mention in the article under the more expensive section, because they are so good.

I think another key question here would be, Who is wearing them? As company owner,I do all the climbing and prefer my Oakleys when in the tree. When I hit the ground and start helping with cleanup, I often change them to whatever is on the dash, usually Starlites. Groundies tend to see more abuse from branches going through the chipper or walking into a dangling rope and having your glasses pulled off your face only to hit the ground. When aloft I want clarity from my specs and of course comfort. Money is not an option for clear vision which ultimately leads to safety. I may be the exception here but I have had my Costas for non-work use for nine yrs and my M frames are going on three yrs.

Along with the glasses there are accessories and extras that might be included.

Lanyards...breakaway of course
Anti-fog solutions and coatings
Bi-focal [cheater] safety glasses...for the aging eyes :)
Mesh lenses

Tom, the article will cover an assortment of extras that workers may like to use for their specs.

I have two pair of the basic DeWalt and they have been great. Also have used the Starlite. I had a pair of bicycling safety/sunglasses I crossed the country with and they lasted two years; very scratch-resistant and anti-fog, and I could never find them again. Bike Nashbar mail order is where I got them.

Blue clear lenses have been my thing for years because they enhance details on overcast days, provide just a little tint to filter hard rays, permit meaningful eye contact and I can still see out of them when it gets dark. ps hi Chris
