Sustainable Landscapes Coordinator - Grayslake, IL

Summary: Coordinate key aspects of Conservation@Home, a program that encourages, supports and recognizes efforts of homeowners and landowners to steward their properties in an environmentally sound manner. Coordinate select ecological restoration projects. Coordinate the organization’s volunteer program.

Type: Full time, year round


Reports to: Conservation and Outreach Manager

Responsibilities:
• At the request of property owners, visit properties throughout Lake County to assess plant composition, wildlife issues, water cleanliness and soil health under Conservation@ Home guidelines.

• Formulate recommendations for property management improvements under Conservation@Home guidelines.

• Recognize and support landowners’ efforts and good practices. Educate about improvements.

• Monitor and facilitate the organization’s public online forum for Conservation@Home topics.

• Write and take photos for monthly Conservation@Home e-newsletter.

• Organize public tours of well-managed private properties and related programs.

• Coordinate the organization’s volunteer program for workdays and Conservation@Home.

• Coordinate select ecological restoration projects on open space properties.

• Contribute to resource updates for the public on vendors, invasives control, and related needs.

• Conduct surveys of public knowledge and opinion regarding Conservation@Home topics.

• Follow through on all appropriate requests from the public and partner groups on above duties.

• Act as staff liaison to Chicago Wilderness natural resource management team.

• Maintain complete files on all active projects to document activities, findings and results.

• Assist with other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree preferred plus two years experience in horticulture, landscape design, natural areas management, environmental education or related field, with an emphasis on sustainable landscaping and natural areas management preferred.

•Strong initiative in taking the steps necessary for success of the Conservation At Home program.

•Outgoing, friendly personality with the ability to easily meet people and quickly gain rapport.

•Ability to work with people with a wide diversity of resources, knowledge and skills.

•Strong communication skills – written, interpersonal, and public speaking.

•Knowledge of native plants and their habitats; invasive plants and their control; wildlife habitat needs and human-wildlife conflicts; stormwater management and erosion control techniques; pond, streambank and lake shoreline management; and Lake County’s ecosystems and natural history.

•Ability to work with and through a staff, committee and board structure to achieve goals.

•Valid driver’s license, good driving record and reliable vehicle (mileage reimbursed).

•Strong computer skills with Microsoft Word, Outlook and Excel.

•Ability to traverse uneven terrain in wide variety of weather conditions.

•A strong interest in land conservation and sincere willingness to help people maintain and strengthen the county’s ecological riches.

*Starting salary: *

$39,000 - $41,000 negotiable, depending on qualifications
