Stumped

I've got to remove four twelve inch stumps that are growing out of a stone wall. Grinding isn't an option and I can't dig them out. What products/options are available to me? Thanks in advance.

I am trying to envision what these stumps look like in relation to the wall. Any tool that uses sharp high speed cutters is probably out. You may have to go OLD SCHOOL and use a hammer and chisel!

Would be nice to see a picture of the site, perhaps that will help spur some other ideas!

Hmmm... How about a blowtorch? I started posting it as a joke, but really, why not? I bet it would tear through them pretty quickly! Way outside the box, but what the heck?

On a similar note, I just did a removal today that requires a small self propelled stumper. The job is yours if you've got one.

Maybe if you chained a beaver to it for a week or so......

Sorry...but I couldn't help myself. Pretty much gonna have to see a picture on this one to be of any real help.

Just use the transporter and beam them into the void.
I think thta you will find the blowtorch idea to be a dud-it will get the wood to burn but the wood won't melt and wood is such a fine insulator that you won't get any real depth to the burn- You can light it but it will take a long time for the wood to be consumed. This sounds like a job fro a hand held stump grinder or just cut close and leave them in place.

Maybe constructing a nice looking wooden box around the stumps would be a good alternative.

Many boxes can be decorated to look very nice, and they also can hide stumps.

There is a product you can get at home depot. Drill holes in the stump, fill with the stuff, let it sit for a while, then gasoline and a match. I've never used it but an oldtimer told me it works FWIW.

How come you can't use a stumper? The smaller portable units can fit into very tight areas and a 12" size stump is right in with their capabilities. Most of these are designed like rototillers. But there is one that is designed around a chainsaw and bar setup so it takes up no more room and is quite handy.

If they are not grindable, it is best to cut them down as close to ground level as possible, cover them with soil and plant moisture-loving vegetation around them.

If stump regrowth is an issue, cover the stumps with black plastic first. This will create an environment suitable for saprophitic organisms that will digest the stumps in a very efficient manner.

If they want them out instantly then this won't be a solution, but i was told you can drill holes and plant mushrooms or something similar and in a few years the stumps will be gone and in their place will be edible mushrooms. Very eco friendly solution if they don't mind the time it takes.
