Stihl dealer screwed up again...not sure if it's good or bad.

Ok...so i have a love/hate relationship with this dealer...like sometimes he says stuff wont even be looked at for 3-4 week on warranty, and then 3 days later sells me a 661 with a 24" and a 36" for $800.....but thats not what happened today. I was in there to grab a few things and he handed me a 193T (thats what we run...our 201's went in the dumpster) and told me $300 out the door. So i get it home and run a tank or 2 through it, grab one of my other 193's, and notice something is off. This this has a 14" bar off a 170 on it. My other 193's came with a .50 63 PM3 50 chain and 3005 000 7409 bar with 9 tooth noses. This one currently has a .043 61 PMM3 50 chain and 3005 000 3909 bar with 7 tooth nose. Needless to say i'm irritated, but is this a good thing? I mean...it feels like the correct chain bites harder and requires more power....like you cant dog it in much...and the chain on this thing damn near needs a dog because you cant bog it down....what should i do here? Run it? Or just go get the correct bar and chain? I attatched a photo...the red is what is on it, the green is what is SUPPOSED to be on it.

I picked up a 192T a couple years ago with the same set up. I like .043 with a 12” bar for Pruning and small removals.

The bar on this one is the correct set up for a 192 as well...but the 193's normally come with a .50 bar that has 2 more teeth on the nose sprocket...i threw them up on the bench and was like "wtf? Why does the new one have a wierd nose on the bar?!"

I can check tomorrow on a new 193 that one of our guys just bought, but i remember from a looooooong while back the 192s did use the smaller narrow chain to help with their lack of power.

Awesome thank you! The stihl chart shows exactly what you said, and it shows the 193 and 201 running the exact same bars...like my other 2 have on them.

Out of curiosity you call 201t's junk. Yet run 193t's. I have to say this shocks me. That aside 193t's are to run .043 chain and bar. They really are gutless unless modded. The 201t and 201TC when fully modded are some well balanced super powerful reliable saws of which I have a few and have modded many. The modding just by passes all the emissions nonsense. Thank California for that.

Thank California for a lot of the bullshit we have to put up with.

Yeah they werent these new ones...i had 3 and atleast one was always not running right...i have 355T's too, and never a hiccup out of them either. These days I just don't see the value in us $650 top handle… I'm sure it's a nicer saw but it's not twice as nice… I'm not any faster with a 201 or 193 than I am with a 355 l. The saw doesnt make the man :-)

I run 193 and 192 with .043 chain. The chain is a little more work to sharpen but the thinner kerf rips through limbs left and right. I climb with the 192 all the time. Can easily cut through largest pieces and even used to take down bigger stuff with a couple cuts as I hate carrying a big saw up the tree. If you switch over to .043 on all the small saws you'll be amazed at better cutting.

Well, maybe i'll keep it the way it is then and try it out in my next removal. Do you really think its more work to sharpen??? i use the file guide that does the tooth and the rakes at the same time, and i believe both the .043 and the .050 use a 5/32 file. The only real cut time i have with the .043 on a 193T setup is on a log in the driveway thats way too big lol...maybe i'll go grab some 6"-8" stuff and see the difference.

Using a file no. I have a Oregon bench grinder sharpener. It doesn't like the thinner kerf chains as much. I can whip through the larger chains like a fast order cook. Do 10-12 an hour. Take my time with the little chains.

I posted this morning that the new 193 my guy bought has the narrow chain...it didn't post for some reason.

Weird! I actually got a call back from a stihl rep today...apparently what is happening is that new saws are shipping without bars in the box, and they are instructed to pull stock off their wall for assembly, and the guy that assembled this one assumed all 14" bars were the same...but, like the last guy said...it takes less HP to turn the PMM3...so i'll leave it alone for now...wee which one i like better on the next job. Dealer offered to swap the bars & chains if i wanted...so we shall see how it turns out

My dealer puts pretty much whatever I want on when I buy a new saw.

The small ones i usually just pick a length...but on the big stuff i do it that way...like on my 661. When i bought the 661 they had it for $1219 with a 25", or they could put a 36" on it for $1245...so i went that route because you cant buy a 36" bar and chain for $26 lol...and a 25" is quite a bit cheaper yet to buy loose

Ya, all this.

Get metal dogs!

I'd like the .043 on my 200t... Never considered that before...hmm... Is it possible? The 16" bar would be much better balanced if .043.

I believe the recommended bar and chain are .043. You will like it much better. The smaller kerf is like a hot butter knife. Not enough saw to RIP those .05 chains

It was recommended for the 192, but not the 193. I'm leaving the .043 on it for the next job...i'll try to get some video of the 2. My orher 193's came with .050 on them, and i think my 170 has a 16" .043 bar and chain on it...maybe i'll try that too lol. Maybe the smaller chain will make it so that it'll pull 16", but i kind of doubt it. 14" is about itnfor these i think.
