Stem Wobble

I think he might be starting to push his luck a little.
It appears the upper branches got caught on another tree and it's forcing the bottom of the top back onto the climber.
At least it appears that way in the picture.

[/ QUOTE ] Starting to? I guess Graeme must have a lot "luck". I reakon after 30 years, luck has less and less to do with it. JMHO

That was 1 of 75 tree's done in the otways about 3 years ago. Averaging around 10 per day. One thing that footage doesn't show well, is how steep the ground is below. Everything was extracted by a high-lead system. Just to get around, you were on hands and knees, and when you fell over...

In some of the other shots, the heads actually bounce and roll down hill, and the logs bounce and skate quite some distance. I'm not completely sure, but I think due to this steepness, Graeme may have been trying to get the head locked up around something so it didn't roll out of the snig area.

If he did set it with the BS, it would have been the double-bigshot.
What he did for a lot of them was set his climbing line in one tree, and swing across to the next, and then spur up to set the pull line, climb back down, take the top out. rinse and repeat.

Frans,
Ouch, that was some serious stem-wobble
ahhhhh.gif

Does anyone know who that was, and whether he sustained any injuries?

Kevin:
The top came back a little but mostly it rolled to the side. It looks as if it might have come close to his right foot, had he not seen what was happening and moved that foot to behind the tree.
The camera didn't keep Graeme in frame and from this angle not clear how close it could have been.

The top did move away from the tree stem further down and avoid any rope entanglements.

Time to emphasize again, with any topping you have to do everything you can to avoid hitting other objects with the top, even if they are below you.

You might expect a top that large to break through branches like that and not come back at you but the risk isn't worth it.
You get good, get fast and sometimes complacent.
When stuff like that happens you want to put it in the bank and remember it.
