SRT descent devices

im gonna step up to something better then my figure 8 for descending outta palms on SRT. what would you recommend for an easy midline attachable and have the ability to let go and not go sailing.

thanks
im looking at the,

grigri 2,

autostop,

ID,

and a few more.

You can use the Kong Robot above your hitch on single line. Its midline attachable, cheap and simple. Thats what I used after the F8 Revolver set-up and before the rope wrench. Think they're only $25 from treestuff.

Petzl RIG, or just go with the f8 revolver setup using your current figure 8. the kong robot works well with a hitch too if you dont mind the fact that its made by kong.

For the ones you listed:
GG2: $95, 8.9-11mm {small, cheapest}
STOP: $105, 9-12mm {small}
I'D (small): $225, 10-11.5mm {not small, huge}
I'D (large): $225, 11.5-13mm {REALLY HUGE}

Some others:
UNICENDER: $280, 11-13mm {nice ride, NOT cheap}
RIG: $150, 10.5-11.5mm {medium size & price}
ROPE WRENCH + hitch: $125+hitch, 10-14mm {nice ride, cool tool}

FWIW, I like:
GG2 for all up, down & limb work (pruning)
RIG for in the hooks (removals)
Personal experiences: the GG2 does not seem to work well on ropes beyond spec., but the RIG seems to 'work' on ropes slightly larger than spec. though not recommended.

Rope Wrench has an optional pin to make it midline attachable. Just buy one already, you need it. All of those other devices are steps along the way to owning a Wrench.

Except the Unicender, I guess, but I understand that has parts that need replacing with heavy use. I don't see that happening with the Wrench.

Time will tell.

Rope Wrench or the Eddy are my two that I use on all my SRT palm tree work...

Rope Wrench SRT Frog system
Eddy SRT RAD system

Good Luck ..Later in SO-CAL

the Petzl 'Stop' and other bobbin style descenders are called 'The Creep' by other rope access workers...cuz they creep down the rope.

Also, most devices that make a bend in the rope around a cam or bollard add twist into the rope. More than one descender has milked all of the hockles into one mass mess of rope and jammed their descent.

Thanks Thumbs!

Joshua...spend the weekend going through Gary Storrick's website, Vertical Devices. Not skimming...read it. You'll have a much better grasp on coming down a rope...good pun, huh?!

Just a question/correction there Tom, my understanding is that when you use a bend, such as on a serpentine friction like the stop, stitchplate, ATC or ladder brake there is no imparted twist but for some reason it will sometimes untwist a previously twisted line.

However when you use a loop, such as on a bollard, bobbin, muenter or figure-8 that will impart a twist as will most unblanced prussic/friction hitches due to the spiral wrapping of the prussic cord.

anecdotally my experiences tend to bear this out.

Anyone else have something definintive on this?

Why would you use the WR [Typonese...

should be RW ]in that configuration? It would change how the other descender works and could lead to dangerous consequences.

WR with a hitch is a brilliant addition to SRT! [I think that the Uni is a tiny bit better...but only a tiny bit ;) ]

This WopeRench of which you speak sounds interesting, Tom. I have not heard of it yet. I must try it.
