split tail length vs. skinny rope

Does anyone else find that the standard lengths for eye to eye split tails (30", 28") doesn't wrap a tidy hitch on smaller diameter lines? I used a 28" on my 11.5mm rope to tie a Distel hitch and theres a lot of slack and the split tail eye rides down the carabiner, there is no slack if I just tie the VT. I could put on more wraps, but then it might be too much friction...
Do climbers use 26" split tails for climbing on 11 mm line and/or depending on what hitch they prefer to tie on?

I'm talking about SRT below, as when I climb double rope, I use 1/2" line.

I climb on 10mm HTP, and I have found that fatter split tails work better. Not so much about the length as the fatness. I know it's weird, but it works. The old tenet of using a smaller diameter friction split tail than your climbing rope doesn't seem to apply.

Today, I was using a tenex eye-eye split tail, 10mm, and it was the best thing I've found yet.

I was using a VT. Next I'll try the 10mm Bee Line, as you mention, my hitch didn't look too tidy being all fat and all.

Yeah think the standard hitch cord lengths make for a sloppy hitch, especially on a smaller diameter line. I just get tenex (my favorite hitch cord) by the foot and make my own.
