Splicing Used Tachyon

Hi folks,

I have done some basic splicing all my life (3 strand, hollow braid etc) but now have come to wanting to splice an eye in a length of old climb line to make a lanyard.
I have washed the rope and "free'd" the inner core, marked and extracted according to NE instructions but come to a problem when i try and feed the fid and inner core through where the core has not been extracted (between marks B&D on the NE splicing instructions). The instructions say that it will be tight but I can't seem to work the fid any further than an inch from the exit point. Any master splice's out their got some tricks or good hints.

Tachyon Splice instructions

Wire fid works best. You can make your own for about $6 at a hardware store. [image]http://

Yeah...what fid are you using?

Honestly, I'd like to encourage you to set this project aside for now. When you are learning how to do it, splicing double braid rope is infinitely more complicated that 3 strand and hollow braid. Now add on to that that you're learning on Tachyon, which is a tighter rope, so you now have that to contend with also. Then add to THAT, that you're splicing used rope...so it's even TIGHTER. All if this means that you're going to be fighting the rope AND trying to figure things out at the same time.

Splicing used Tachyon is surely possible. I just think you'll be better off getting some new rigging line to practice on so that you can master the maneuvers. Then when you come back to this used tachyon, it will be much less of a fight.

Pull more core out to bunch up the cover and give you a little more room to work with.
Don't use a push fid. Use a wire fid or a toss wand.
DBT is right...Maybe make your core tail a lot longer than it needs to be, then taper the last foot if it, pull the tapered tail through, then keep pulling to get the "actual" usable part of the core tail through
Flex and massage the rope a lot to loosen the fibers
KY Jelly works and washes off clean when you're done!

Show pictures. That will help us see if there are other issues.

Toss wand for sure! Also, when you pull the core out of the braid grab the little fuzzy crap and the plastic tracer strip and pull it out as far as you can then cut that junk out. Made my life easier.

I have had terrible luck with the wands. I'm sure it's all operator error but I have 2 and both need snares. They don't get used enough to replace them though. I'm happy with the wire fid.

Send the Toss wands my way if you don't want em.

The second DB splice I did was new Tachyon, I think I cut the splice off out of frustration about 4 time. I finally got it and it took me about 3 hours, now I can do it in about 1.5 to 2 hour per splice. That does involve going really slow and double checking every thing, lots less fighting, and hang ups now.

A hammer handle, can help with the final burry

G'day Nick,

I can hear the reservation in your post. And i truly appreciate your concern. I assure you apart from never splicing braided rope I am quite competent with my hands and mind and have infinite patience. It is not important how long it takes what the aim is to recycle a rope that is otherwise useless, test ones self, learn and foremost have a termination point that can be trusted for life support.
I was trying to use a push fid (Selma). But will construct a wire fid out of 2.5mm high tensile fencing wire. The KY sounds like a good idea I was going to ask whether neat dish washing liquid would be appropriate to lubricate with but will get some KY as you recommend. I will take some snaps as I proceed and post. Thanks for the tips as I have read all the potential issues that you list and knew it wasn't going to be easy for a first time around.

Tony,
For what it is worth the advice to use the wire fid is best.
Just put a tight eye splice in my partners used Tachyon and I couldn't get it to happen with a standard fid, Toss wand was brutal and broke a vectran braided loop I had made, and the wire fid worked on the first try :-)

Tony I learned on tachyon myself and its definitely one of the harder to splice. It took a handful of tries before I got it then another handful before I got it right. As for Nicks advice I kinda have to agree, I'm a patient guy myself but I can tell you that I would rather start with algebra before jumping to calculist. The part you are stuck at right now is not the hardest part of that splice by any means. The final bury is where it gets bad. I would order a 10-15ft piece of velocity or blaze. Those are the easiest 11mm lines in my opinion. Once you do it once or twice take a shot at the used rope. Either way good luck and stick with it!

Jay
