soil fracturing

A few years ago i used a portable soil fracturing device along with 6+ inches of mulch some old plywood and a hundred yards of road fill to prevent the compaction around second growth doug firs. We were essentilly building a road for the transport of goods on an engineering project. Well, i cannot remember the name of the fracturing device- does any one have a lead on this?
