Today we came across this beech at our client's property. Besides being a wickedly cool tree, it begs the question how does this occur???

Vines would spiral up the tree. All those wrinkles are horizontal. Besides, who came tromping out here in the woods and removed every scrap of vine from the tree afterwards? No, something more internal to the tree, but what???
Very curly wood in that tree. High value wood for wood workers. I believe grain structure like this is some sort of genetic variation that gets triggered by some local abiotic condition. I don't think it compromises the structure or overall vitality of the tree. Kinda like a hot chick with a lazy eye. Strange to see,but probably not harmful.

American Beech? I've seen this in a handful of beech out of hundreds. Your example is the most intensely "wrinkled" I've seen. I asked an expert at the Arnold Arboretum (Boston) about it. Cause unknown, not considered pathological, appears to be a genetic variation. On one woods beech I found like this, the child trees (root sprouts) growing out of the root zone all had the same characteristic as the parent.

Example of a "rippled" Fagus grandifolia from Forbes Woods, Milton, Massachusetts. Other mature beeches nearby have normal bark/trunk characteristics.

Hmmm, I've seen enough beeches like this in woods environments with the ridges equal on all sides of the trunk, and as I mentioned in one case with the root sprouts exhibiting the same characteristic as the parent tree, thoughts?
