i JUST realized something... sometimes my saw doesn't 'bite' into material the way i'm used to. i've been wondering why for years. NOW i know! it's cause i have NOT been filing my depth gauges after filing my chain. Yes yes, i have seen in my saw manuals, all the info about how to correctly sharpen the chain. But honestly, it's too much info. Makes me dizzy, what w/all the lines and angles and verbiage, LOL!! So i never really tried to digest all of it. and i was never taught.

The Oregon video in that Amazon vise listing was an extreme eye opener for me. Much obliged NJdelaney!!
jest experiment, and do what works for you

I strongly suggest you don’t give that gadget thing a second thought. I’m not the smartest fella around but I fail to see how that could possibly sharpen a chain properly. You need a file (or a stone or disc if using a machine) that removes steel from the gullet of the cutter.

A bench vise is nice, then just a file and a handle for it. I’ve never tried a guide or a jig or whatever the other stuff is, and haven’t felt the need to. My chains turn out sharper than new, every time.

I use a flat file to take a stroke or 3 off the rakers when I sharpen. It depends how short the cutter is getting. If two or 3 cutters really got hammered and I gotta remove a lot of metal to get it right, the rakers in front of those short cutters will get taken down a little further than the rest of them. Don’t take them down too far. The vibration is so uncomfortable in one’s hands and wrists.

It takes a little practice, but it’s not rocket surgery. Kinda therapeutic. Put on some music, pour a glass of whiskey, and get to filing.

Well dialed in rakers are integral to a truly good cutting saw... Do yourself a huge favor and purchase a raker depth gauge until you become more competent a sharpening...

So you have NEVER run a saw in a tree, have NO experience with the device in question, and have run a saw on the ground for a couple hours in your entire life. Do you think you are qualified to be dishing out advice on anything concerning chainsaws son?

Same conversation, different thread. Maybe @Tom Dunlap could change treesap’s “well-known member” to “teen member”?

It would keep Rico’s blood pressure down and clear confusion for other members when they’re handed advice from someone with barely any experience.

Btw, treesap, since I jumped into this, I want to ask you a question. Do you know who the biggest experts on raising children are?

The people who don’t have any.

Chew on it, and please don’t respond. That would show some maturity.

So much for maturity.

Yes I said I wanted to ask you a question. I also answered it for you. Wanting to ask a question and wanting a response are two different things.

It’s becoming tiring to see this same display of teen spirit in so many threads. Admittedly, this is YOUR thread, so I’m just going to bow out and let you sit with your ball. Do us a favor and let your comments sit here so they don’t tantrum in other places.

Whew..the worst part of my job here. Babysitting spats between adolescent adults

I've asked school bus drivers and teachers which group of students are the worst to teach. Overwhelmingly, junior high/middle school age boys wins the ribbon.

yall are welcome to play stupid games, there are many other MUCH nicer forums to go to, and I will do just that

I dont play your stupid games

Better to take the time and search through the files of videos that the engineers from Oregon chain have made showing the right way to sharpen. There was a flippant remark about this not being rocket science. That line is used dismissively to make it seem that sharpening chain is simple and easy. If that were the case why do so many saws cut poorly? Look at cuts out in the woods on trails. Spend some time looking at cuts the next time you visit the debris dump.

I found that the Pferd tools work soooo well. Not expensive either

properly sharpened chain is HUGE

id look at cuts on the trails, but the only trails I go to are on my property, with saws shapened either by me or my dad

my point still stands, figure out what works for you, your chain, bar, powerhead, wood, technique, there isnt a perfect way to sharpen that will make every saw cut good

I tell my baby sister there’s something wrong with her, she’s in school right now finishing up her teaching degree - middle school English, and her soon-to-be fiancée will be a middle school History teacher.

Some day I have to buy one of those, just to try it. I haven’t hand filed a chain in a long time, we just have too many to keep up (we have two bench mounted grinders to keep up with the 11 saws in daily service), but I’ve heard nothing but good about those sharpeners.

I gotta grab some pferd files, I just use the stihl ones, they work pretty well

for anyone new to filing, get a file handle, its like $3 and stops the end of the file digging into your hand

Golf balls work great. They feel a little off balance when just holding them, but are quite good while filing.

If your ever needing golf balls, search along the road next to a golf course. I used to work across a busy 4 lane road from one and we'd often find 10-12/week in the front of our property before mowing. I'm surprised that I never heard of one hitting a car, aside from the one that came out from under one of our mowers.

I will have to go find some

I will probably find a box of them at a thrift store for a dollar lol
