95% isopropanol - I use medical grade for sap removal so there are no other contaminating components (also use this to sterilize and cool pruners/ saws, etc. after flaming).
95% isopropanol can be used on ropes, rope runner, etc. Just be sure to keep changing to clean rags as there will be goo left on the rag as the isopropanol evaporates from it. Watch the fire hazard too - both the vapour and your used rag pile (leave these in open air in the sun to dry so there's no spontaneous combustion in your waste bin!). I then use Teufelberger Scrubba to finish clean ropes in the front load washer in a rope bag. Like new!
You can use acetone for conifer sap too, on metal parts only, but not if they have retainer nuts with nylon parts, etc.
FYI isopropnol also works well on auto paint to remove sap off your '55 Chevy Nomad - NOT acetone!
