San Francisco Botanical Garden

I have been leading a crew on a large tree job in the SF Botanical Garden since late March. Our focus has been on pruning the larger trees (90% Motrerey Cypress) and removing some hazardous trees. We have also done a small amout of cabling.

This has been the biggest job I have ever been a part of. We were running about eight guys everyday during the first pruning phase, which lasted over two months. For the removal phase we downsized to a four man crew and brought in a 30 ton AT crane. We just finished the removals a couple weeks ago and are finishing up with some more pruning until our budget runs out.

Most of these trees had never been pruned and if they had it was only to remove a broken branch. There were lots of large stubs and hangers. It was a challenge not to destroy the collection plants below.

This pine removal was a tricky one. It had been dead for several years and was not safe to climb. The crane could not reach it. We ran a line between two large Cypress that were nearby, using the GRCS to tension it, and attached the climbers line in the middle.

I got to visit SF a few months ago and we went to the Botanical Gardens while we were there. I'm jealous! There are some really nice trees in the Bay area. Maybe if we go back sometime I'll track you down and make you take me climbing. Or did you say you're considering coming back to KY? At least come in Oct for the competition.

what a cool job. what company are you working for? thanks for posting the pics.

Great pictures

That does look like a really cool job to be on. Will Bartlett be the go to guys for the SFBG now, every couple years or so? That'd be a sweet contract!

We stayed 2 months in SF a few years back but never made it outta Boedecker Park...whole diffrnt type of wild life there!!
