Round Files

Hi, just venting my frustration re round files for sharpening my chain. Over here, in the uk its all Oregon chain or still branded. Is it my imagination or are the files made from candle wax these days. Ive been a cutter for 25 plus years and recken file quality has gone way down hill.

Not completely sure, but I believe the Stihl one are manufactured by Pferd. There 2 in 1 files is made by Pferd, that's for sure.

I found some round diamond files that I think were for sharpening small wood working gouges. They seem to last a long time. Cost was not too bad. I will try to remember where I got them but it was Stateside in any case. Might not be of any use to you.

Thanks all. Stihl or Oragan, the're just not as they were. Thats about all we have for choices. you can buy a box full and its all a bit hit and mis as to what you get.

Pferd.

I have some of both...

Pferd saw made in Switzerland Germany
Stihl say made in Germany Switzerland (as are Oregon files...)
(edit to correct country of origin)

They look a little different too.

I like the Pferd better. Sthil seemed to take metal off more efficiently, but trying side by side, then switching which file sharpens which chain, the Pferd consistently gave me a sharper chain than Stihl brand.

A number of years ago I found save edge files. Only ones I buy now. File like butta and last a while. I will pay for quality. Nothing worse than a shitty chainsaw file. I dont know about relative cost because I dont shop around.

Stihl files are made by Vallorbe. A factory Stihl rep told me when I asked him at the expo a few years ago.

Save edge files are nice files as well they remove a lot of material in a hurry. IMO they don't leave a nice crisp edge as other files do.

Pferd is a nice file as well I would say they are comparable to Stihl/Vallorbe files.

I mainly use Stihl files, seem to hold up well and are available everywhere.
