Rope Glazing from rappeling out of tree

A while back I had to bust on my son for glazing over his rocket line. He never really did anything I saw to account for it as he was slow and methodical in his climbing. I was mildly pissed cause it was a new rope and he had some how glazed about 50 feet of it.

We never did find out why/how it happened.

Then the other day I was climbing on some Cherry-Bomb and when we finished topping out the tree I rappelled 20 feet down. It was a smooth, quick descent but nothing even approaching a burn out.

As I packed my rope I noticed the durned thing had glazed.

Anyone else experience this with rocket-line or cherry-bomb? What about other ropes?

I can't say I've seen it in any of my 1/2 inch lines before.
 
What type of crotch were you running through? Are you thinking it was the uni that caused it or do you think it would have happened with another decender also?
 
I found the Rocket line to glaze easily, part of the reason i stopped using it. I do like to move quickly through the trees and haven't glazed any other rope than the rocket line.
 
MonkeyL, I don't think it was the uni, rather more liklely the crotch I was running out of. Dumb of me for not using a friction saver.

Though this isn't the first time I've had a fun, fast descent, it is the first time I've glazed my line.

Waldo, I'm beginning to think the same, it may be the allgear 24 strand cover just isn't up to it.
 
Cherry bomb and tachyon are both ropes that gave me trouble with glazing. All the glazing has come from descents using friction savers and all the glazing is due to the hitch. I just noticed it the other day on a new hank of tachyon. I was surprised to see the rope was in a bad or worse shape than my ocean poly hitch cord. It was a wide open jump with no interfering branches. These two ropes seem to hate natural crotches in my experience.
 
I bought 600 feet and tested it out to see if we wanted to sell it at Xtreme Arborist Supply.

We only want to carry the best, high quality products, not all products.

I bought the rocket line.

Sample of it felt good and looked great.

I was sad to see that it melted very easily.

cover glazed on the 2nd job I used it on.

Using spider jack 2.

Glazes very easy and milks a lot too.

Not happy with it.

Nice color, but that's about it for the positives.

XAS will not be carrying it.
 
Best rope in my opinion is the calamine from yale. best colour, really nice stretch characteristics. cant go wrong with that rope.

I have to say I was impressed with how tough the cover is on the 11.7mm yale double braids. They wear really well. I have not glazed one yet all they do is fuzz up a little bit from my experience.
 
We just glazed the crap out of our rope the other day. In fact to the point that there is a ten foot section about 70 feet from one end that is completely flattened. Makes it interesting when getting to it on a long drop and suddenly speeding up! Needless to say it is retired now.

I think it was the type of fibers used to make the rope, not how the rope was used.

I'm on Poison Hyvee now, going calamine next, probably.
