Alright lets hear some of those rookie funny storys that werent funny at the time. Ive heard plenty at work. This goes for new guys who stayed in the trade and people who werent meant for it. People who said they were experienced that werent. These are always gold. Im still a rookie (2 years in tree industry)

I had a new ground guy i asked for a block (worded it pully) bring me a ratchet strap, come along, and a porta wrap before he figured it out.

I heard about this one guy thay decided to file the rakers right off a chain cause it didnt bite enough for his liking.

Shoot em down below im sure everyone loves these stories.

Had my pulley, biner, and sling all attached and waiting to be sent up into the tree. Asked the boss to send up the pulley. After what i felt to be a very long wait, I get the pulley up to me, the biner and sling were still on the ground.

Thats better than what i did to my boss my first month as a groundie. He did the same thing. I tied it on and it made it about 60 feet up before coming down and smashing on a rock below. To top it off it took him yelling and screaming at me before i was able to get something to semi hold. Oops

One I did. Was just dropping the top off of a silver maple leader, as i was uncomfortably close to the neighbours japanese maple. Decided to rig it out. Had everything set up, pulled the rope out of the way to make my notch, all is well. Let the rope go, had groundie set up the portawrap and told him to let it run. Make back cut and crown goes over perfectly. I think to myself "that is the smoothest rig i have ever felt. No impact at all" then i realize i made the cut below the pulley. Oops.

The crown missed the japanese maple by inches.

Heard about a guy using the rake backwards. Same guy was chipping while the foreman and I were cutting. I here grinding on what sounds like a stuck log. I look over to the chipper and see smoke bellowing out of the chute. I didn't know how fast I could get over a fence in chaps until that moment.

I was training a greenhorn several years ago and I kept stressing not to cut the new rigging line. One of the sections we lowered was a good size, so I repelled down to assist with it. A section of the lowering line was hidden from my view and of course I nicked it good. That's also how I learned how to splice slings.

I Had a job removing a bunch of clustered pin oaks next to a house and some cement slabs that were going to be built on. I kinda buried my one groundy so I came down to help him grind some brush and catch up a little bit. He was kinda a "simple" guy ill say and he was trying to keep up and stuck a branch in that had snagged my rigging line. Next thing I know i see my rigging line good ol true blue zip past my face at about 200 mph with a metal carabiner tied to it. I ran and disengaged the clutch on the chipper and shut her down. Thank god no one was hurt that day. Lesson learned, always make sure ropes are free and clear of any brush that is going into the chipper and never rush things. Always pay close attention to your actions and the actions of those helping you as well as it is very easy to get hurt.

I hate chipping with ropes on the ground. I bag and carry my climbline or tie the ropebag off the ground. If I can get my tail into a neighbors' yard over the fence, that helps.

I almost died from my access line going into the chipper, after I made it ABSOLUTELY clear that it needs not to, and "if you can't do something safely DON'T DO IT". Don't trust people with your life. Don't trust 'simple' people with their own safety, particularly if you're the boss.

Thankfully I work with a good crew and attentive groundsman. I was top-downing a cedar over a nice yard and set of stairs, had the block hitched, made my face cut, repositioned myself behind the trunk and called out "back-cut." But before I could light up the saw, the guys on the ground gave the lowering line a little wiggle and asked if I was gonna tie off the log.
Could have been bad.

I was in a baby white pine. No taller then 20'. Slight lean towards the inside corner of a fence. Easy peasy I say to myself. Working solo I zip up delimbing with ease. I get to my top and shave off a bunch of branch weight to help my favor. Face cut, back cut, and I get ready to push and finish the back cut. Before I start pushing I hear a crack and it comes back over me. I was more worried about the fence then myself and back then I wasn't using a saw lanyard, so only one free hand. Some how I spun the top sideways behind my back and only scraped my forehead. Easy peasy .....
