question on vt lava again?

How many of you are climbing lava with and 10 mm beeline cord with eye &eye. I was having an issue a while ago with the vt locking up after descending a bit. When I try to ascend again my vt is all locked up. I have to manually loosen the vt a bit to get it to slide up. Defiantly a pain when you are in precarious poison.
I weigh 195.
Do I need to make my own length of beeline cord and tie the ends myself? And if I do go with a different length or should I stay with 10mm or go to 8mm.
Again I’m climbing lava most of the time and ivy occasionally

For what it's worth, it's my experience and certainly my opinion that 8mm cord works best with Tachyon, a.k.a. Lava. I use HRC, 8mm Bee Line and 8mm Ocean Polyester with my VT on 10.5 mm Tachyon without any problems, i.e., if the VT is tied correctly. I found 10mm to be difficult to use and an inappropriate size.

Play with different variations of your prussic. You'll get it. I run that same rope/cord, and weigh about the same. Had that problem and just had to play around a bit to dial it in...8 mm does bite more consistently, but its so small that I, personally, burn my hands more. I do buy bulk and tie my own. How do you tie yours? Any pictures?

Yep, play with variations on your knot... near the ground obviously. You'll find a combo that works.

I doubt a 10mm hitch cord is your best choice on a 10.5mm rope unless you tie a Blakes... but I would have thought it for the opposite reason. I would've guessed it would be to slippy. I guess the nice thing about 10mm Belline is that the core is very supple polyester. 8mm Beeline has a Vectran core (same as HRC) which is a little stiff and tends not to bind as much... to the point that it doesn't necessarily catch with a VT sometimes either.

My lava is 11.5mm

I was just about to say it's 12mm - at least, IIRC, that's what Sherrill Tree's rope chart says.

yale on yale ....blaze on bee line 8 mm,, buy in bulk and tie your own i just love the way my triple fishermans choke down on my william ball and fixe

What is HRC?

It's great stuff, that's what. It's a 6mm Vectran core with a spun Nomex blend jacket making it 8mm. It's easy to splice and makes a very nice VT. It's made by New England Ropes and you can get it at Wespur or Knot & Rope Supply.

It's comparable to 8mm Beeline which also has a a Vectran core.

Thanks for clearing that up for me. I saw it mention a lot. I’ll send some pics of how I tie my vt later this week.
Most of the time my vt runs nice and smooth. But when I’m pruning and just hanging away from the tree and want to ascend again it seems tight as hell. I have to use all my strength to pull the rope threw

That happens with most hitches, if you have a lot of hang time they progressively tighten. When it gets so tight that it's a PITA to move rope through, take a lock on the tail and re-dress the hitch, loosen it up a little and you're good to go.

I just bought a lava, and got some 8mm beeline just cuz I've never tried it before. Seems like a sweet combo.

Does lava ever get fuzzy?

Does anyone that owns a lava know if this rope gets a nice fuzzy grip over time and natural crotches?

I climbed on someone elses and figured it was slippery cuz he always used a rope guide. I bought mine thinkin i'd have it fuzzed up in no time, but it still feels like its right out of the bag.

Its a wicked rope, but fuzzier would be nicer.

It should fuzz up alitle. are you using it for removals or just pruning? removals will fuzz it up from natural crotching

actually on bigger removals is the only time i'm on a rope guide. i usually a natural crotcher. I guess i just have to give it time. I do like the extra wrap on the VT.

Personally, I think lava is a mm. smaller than P.I., and P.I. would stay rounder/harder., knot control maybe a slight advantage to lava., and lava a tad lighter.
