Prescott, AZ tree work questions...

evo

Been here much more than a while
Location
My Island, WA
My family and I are considering moving to Prescott in about a year or so. We would be pretty much moving blind, never been in the area, nor know anyone in the area. This leaves the questions of what's out there for tree work? In my imagination people there will value their trees more due to heat, and well perhaps the lack of them might make the people appreciate them more than here (rural PNW). Are there many reputable tree crew? Many ISA arbo's? How about wages?

Anyone here out in that neck of the woods (desert)?

Hi Evo, I grew up in Presscott and still love the area. I wish you the best of luck. I moved away about 8 years ago so I cant offer a lot of current info but in all the time I spent there I never recall seeing a tree company truck cruising around, my grandmother has her trees done by a handy man. I dont know how much time youve spent in the area but there arent a whole lot of big trees around, some larger cottonwoods in isolated little pockets here and there. I've actually given this a lot of thought because my wife and I are heading to Prescott in a month or so to sell our house that we've been renting out for years and I was hopeing to round up some work while were there before moving to FT Collins. I think your best bet is to target the areas around Thumb Butte and the mountains just south of the city proper for pine tree work. A lotta nice houses in those areas and theyre the only consistently heavily wooded areas around town. If your willing to drive an hour or so theres always the verde valley, or flagstaff for a ton of pine work. Well, your probably tired of reading by now but feel free to pm me if you have any questions about the area. Your gunna love it there.

I lived in Flagstaff for a few years and the tree industry in N Arizona is pretty bad. I wouldnt recommend it as a career move. The Forest Service has decent forestry jobs however.

Jakers, pm sent.

Marlinspiker, what makes the tree industry in norther AZ so bad? Can you give me more details? PM if you wish...

I worked for a guy up in Sedona, Verde Valley Area. I think you may want to check into APS or some other utility. Not much going on up there. Phoneix is 100 miles south. Big city and there is work here. The worst tree work you can imagine and low pay but itts work. Damn dude. Arizona? We have some awesome trees, some big ones.....but its hard to make a living here. For me anyways. Im still trying. Goodluck! Joshua Tree is in CampVerde. They LOOK like a big tree service. I always invite them to come down and comptete but they never do. Again, best of luck

Ponderosa pines never need pruning btw, only for fire clearance . Deadwooding Trees up there seems to be a waste of time to me and thats all the pruning your would be really be able to sell. Well...there are Cottonwoods...I dont know. Good luck

what jesse said pretty much. Lots of fly by nights, including myself back in the day. Me and my buddy used to work out of a VW bus during the offseason from firefighting. No insurance, no clue hahahaha. Ive come along way since then.

Don't know about tree work in Prescott, but some good rock climbing! Spent many days at Groom creek working boulder problems, also much climbing at Granite mountain. There are some nice historic trees in downtown Prescott. Prescott used to be the state capital. Whiskey row is fun too. The AZ tree climbing championship is being held there this year in March.

Bulbs are popping and our witchhazel buds started popping, too. Take some Vitamin D and hang tight. hahaha.

I can appreciate looking for more sun.

I wonder what your local microclimate is like there. Do you live on Camano?

It's not really my idea, I fell in love with a desert rat. I like the moss on my back, and the algae in the crevies. I'm livin on whidbey, not cammano. South Whidbey has about a 50/50 shot of being in the rain shadow. Cammano and everett are frequently in the convergence zone. Central Whidbey has prickly pear growing natively their cute little buggers, nothing like the Sonora. So who's going to that climbing comp? I'm looking at plane tickets to rub elbows and beg for a job when the time comes... I do miss the desert though, I survived Tucson for a few years.

I hear Prescott is nice, have not spent too much time there, and most of that was for Arbor Master Training years back. Have been living in AZ and in Flagstaff since late 2003. The local Utility (APS) does pay well and has great benefits but they have not hired from the outside for the past couple of years and does not appear to be hiring anytime soon unless things take a crazy turn as more and more of the work is being contracted to the likes of Asplundh and Phillips & Jordan to name a few. Good Luck.
