planting

I know that planting doesn't have the flare of all these climbing topics but it still is a big part of the job.

Just the other day I was introducer to 'RootTrapper' a root ball holder i guess. It's from Alabama. It's a with cloth that fits inside a pot they vary in size.

What's good about these compared to pots is when the roots reach the pot wall they turn and start to circle in this reusable cloth they don't turn they just keep putting out fine feeder roots everything I've seen, heard or read seems to look like a great product.

Does anyone have any experience or mentionable comments on this product? I'd love to hear back.

Well if we are thinking about the same thing. One of my old professors told me about a guy he knew doing something along the same lines. We had a discussion about it and wondered if the tree roots would go back to normal once in the ground. That is stop pushing so much feeder/absorbing roots and go back to nice bicycle spoke type structural roots. Or will the roots just be a big pot of mush type of roots and nothing to keep the tree anchored.

I guess time will tell. I look forward to hearing about the research.

I've found that the size of the root ball in these type of setups (also called gro-bags) can be very small, so the tree needs VERY good staking, and extra water to get established. Grow bags were all the rage for a while, but most growers aren't bothering anymore.
