Penn-Del Shade tree symposium

Any comments on this years shade tree meeting? I personaly didnt like the new location. The Lancaster Host was much better.Dr John Ball puts on a vary good discusion. This is the second year I have heard him and He dose a great job.

I thought the location was much better. What didn't you like about it? It was almost too nice for a bunch of tree guys, but all the advantages out weighted the very few cons.

Best turn out its ever had, or so i heard.

Parking was the big down side for me. We had two vehicals that were parked in the same garadge for the same amount of time and as I was going over our recipts for my expence report and found we were charged three different fees, $10,$7,$9. we used our vouchers and still got charged three different fees out of four parking charges. Go ahaid and call me cheap but I didnt like paying for parking after droping $1600.00 for six guys. I was also disapointed there was no out side area for the venders. Our company is in the begining stages of specing out a bucket and I was planning on using this event to point out some important options to our office managment who makes the purchising decisions but dont have any idea about tree work.I also liked the lecture hall at the host better I thought the sound was better.

I might not be the best to answer. But the bucket trucks would have been inside if they were there. A couple of the vendors didn't make it because of a show out west and then the New England Grows show that immediately followed ours. Disappointing i know but i don't think the location was the reason for their absence.

As for the lecture hall, i had no problem hearing or seeing, though i kinda wish i wasn't able to see as well with some of those pictures Dr Ball showed. One thing i did like about the lecture halls was that you didn't have to walk between buildings to hear different speakers and see the show floor. Everything was under the same roof.

Granted there were some downsides and parking i'm sure was one of the biggest. But i think the pro's far out weighted the cons.

The location was much better simply because there was other things to do within walking distance after the show was over each night. This was not the case as you had to drive to anything of interest.

There was a lot more room which actually made it feel as if it wasn't as full but the truth is that it had the best turn out of any year.

Keep the comments coming though. I'm sure the board will read this as well as the comment forms if you filled one out. This is a good place to input your opinion. It will only make things better in the future!

Hope you at least left with some gained knowledge.

This show was about the worst I've seen in my years of coming. I've been coming for the last ten years.
The food was terrible. Did the sandwiches even resemble a hogie at all? This close to the hogie capital of the world I would have expected better. No chips, pretzels, pasta salad or potato salad on Mon. They did have potato salad on Tues. after much complaining I'm sure. No coffee for the lunch crowd. I could go on but you get the Idea.
The host had a better lecture hall as well. No door prizes I mean come on! Do the math on how much they took in. As stated it had one of the largest turnouts and they can't even give out a few pair of $50 Felco's.
The reason they did not have more truck vendors is because of the cost involved to have them inside. I believe it cost more than $800 to have something inside.
The hotel itself was way better. If vendors travel show to show then this would be a big plus.
All in all very disapointed. Will I be returning to this location if things don't change. I'm still out on this one.

Thank You Tony.

I haven't been in a number of years but thought the Host was good. Have some good memories from there. Hanging out with Pete and Stanley. Following Shigo in the exhibition hall and listening to the stupid questions people would ask and how he would answer them.

Yes, I first Met Stanley there as well with his custom splicing board. He could engage you in intelligent, lively conversation all the while turning out the most tedious of splices. I still find it amazing to this day as I grunt and groan through a class 1 DB splice!

Peter D. and I once had an in depth discussion over the differences between single end and double end tenex and a few six pacs. Pete didn't drink that much that evening. I held up his end of the bargain! It was not long after that we met again in Baltimore to help with ITCC set up. It was the last time we spoke.

At the host on the stage Riggs also confessed that sometimes he does things, like tying in twice, just because "They make you feel good" To this day I still practice "feel good techniques" for their own sake.

All things change. It is up to us to push that change forward.

If you ever get back into Lancaster Eric let me know we'll have toast to old times, old friends and the future. All at the same time, without batting an eyelash. Just like Stanley and his conversation while splicing.

Country boy, do you have a personal interest in the Penn- Del chapter? It seems you may, your comments seem biased imho. The vast majority of the people I talked to had alot more negetive coments than positive. The comment sheet had a very, very limited space to put comments down about the venue. So small in fact it would be hard to put down a sentence with a complete thought.

Tony were you at the show? If so what were your thoughts? Thanks

I was indeed there.

All in all I liked the new place better. The demo tree was way easier to set up due the the 33.5 foot ceilings! I liked the close proximity of the rooms. While the main meeting hall was not as cozy, I liked the double screens for the presentations. I did not notice any problems with the sound, but then I was pretty close up front on Monday. The hotel bar was larger and they did not even come close to running out of beer! The downtown area around the convention center was nice too, plenty of good places to eat/drink with in an easy walk.

Parking was a pain! There was a noticeable lack of vendors/equipment as well. The poor weather Tuesday made for a massive Bug Out so Todd's presentations were not as well attended as they could have been.

Feel free to forward you comments to the chapter. The contact info is on the web page. Just search for Penn-Del ISA.

I freely admit to my bias. I help the chapter out on a few things and know the amount of planning and prep that goes into such a venture I also know that the people responsible do their level best to make the show a success. However, there is always room for improvement.

I dont think that the main goal of the Penn Del symposium is to high light vendors but for educational experiences. And in this accord they have always been successful.

Other than being a member of the Penn/Del Chapter i have no other personal interest there. All the complaints i heard where about the food. Which is pretty petty to complain about since that is a simple fix. Other than parking everything else i thought about the new venue was better and if you took your time and looked you could find cheap parking (I parked for free from Sat-Tue).

I'd much rather look at the bright side of things, being negative gets you no where. Looking forward to next year!
