Outa rope

This weekend I competed at Legends. I purchased a brand new rope with a spliced eye. 150'
The very first climb I made on the rope was in one of the work climbs with a 62' TIP
Rang the last bell and headed for the target when 4' above the ground my hitch came to a stop at my stopper knot 12" from the end of my rope. Thank God I run with a stopper knot! Double checked the label which clearly reads 150' then took out a tape measure only to find it was 116' not 150'

The take away here is use stopper knots and maybe we should check our rope length to verify.

I will not be discussing at this point where I purchased the rope so please don't ask or post your assumptions..It is not the point of this post.
Thank you

Saw you and talked briefly about this at the comp. Do you think that the seller should be held accountable in some way, to some degree, and should buyers like us care about this? It seems as though it should all be on us to identify such a rope - I agree with that. Is there still an issue with a seller doing this?

Some OEMs measure the rope out with a counter while it is on spooling equipment... under tension. So, they are quite often short... but usually only by 1 ~ 4 feet... not 34 feet!

My own experience is to measure the rope when it arrives... only once did I send it immediately back for being short. The seller replaced it with one that was a couple feet long. I think they measured some themselves to make sure I got one that wasn't short. I think most responsible sellers would do this. If it's more than six feet short, I think it is reasonable to send it back.

Possible they mistakenly sent you a 120’ with a few feet loss for the splice, instead of 150’ minus splice? Sounds about right, yeah?

I’d definitely let the seller know, probably an honest mistake and most vendors would want the chance to make things right.

I believe the seller should definitely be held accountable since it was labeled as 150’. That doesn’t exclude the byer(me). I did an inspection as I always do with new gear. Checked the label and the rope, but I should have also checked the length as well.
In the end it is the purchaser that can be most affected so the purchaser should be extra diligent with gear. Especially life support.
Trying to figure out which side I would have been on legally is much harder than adjusting my inspection practices.

I was one of the judges for your run and I remember that well. Shocked all the judges in the ring. The manufacturer even had the tag in the shrink wrap marked 150' BRAND new. There should be hell to pay. I'm also mad for you. Even if you don't want to share the manufacturer's name, please keep us informed how they respond/if they make it right.

Edit: didnt see the 2nd page. Glad to see the manufacturer made it right with you
