Here’s an example from a recent job. Vista prune over a 5 acre piece of conservation wetland. Most of the trees hadn’t been touched in 20 years. I subbed in 2 spider lifts and a few other climbers. We were there for 2 weeks. Most of the material came from over 1,000 feet away through a path that got impassable unless it was frozen. We would forward with the Giant 254 in the sub-freezing mornings and stage on the lawn. The picture is showing less than 1/3 of the brush.

The chipper was set up about where I took the photo from. We skidded with the Giant up to the landing and quickly drop the hitch and race away for the next one. I fed the chipper with the ex. Each hitch was big enough that I had to break them down in 1/2 or 1/3 to keep the feed going. I’d be pulling my hair out watching a mini try to feed these hitches and then play fetch while the chipper was screaming away.

Yes but all of your equipment was not Chinese was it ?

We sometimes have a mini wheel loader forward to the ex which then feeds. It’s much faster because the mini is on its way out for another hitch while the ex manages feeding.

Similar to a larger scale clearing, a skidder will drop a hitch at the chipper and something else takes it from there.

Get a winch for your mini and you’ll be in love.

I have it mounted on top of the mini boom. It’s a branch manager, just fabbed a mounting bracket and removed the bollard. I did add a gusset to strengthen. Lots of applications but yarding in areas that are impassable, winch in to the grapple either pinch or let it dangle like a crane, take it to the landing and disconnect there.
I have about 120’ of amsteel 3/8th which is probably overkill and could drop down a diameter for more length. I don’t have a winch on the chipper, which I’d likely use but really I don’t have a need if I bring the mini.

Cool to finally see the winch in action, quicker than I expected too. @oceans curious why all that brush had to be twitched out of a wetland vs cut-to-lay-flat? Must have cost a prodigious amount with mult crews.

Conservation called for it on this job. It’s probably the sheer volume. A few areas we actually did try to cut to flat to save some work but it became a thick bed too dense to “hide”. The understory was absolutely awful to get through, too. Super dense green briar, grape vine, bittersweet, honeysuckle, holly, bittersweet, and also some bittersweet. The trees had to be de-vined just to get a branch to the ground.

It is, and it might not even be available to the market. It’s a Ramsey hdp 8000 with a proprietary motor essentially twice the speed and half the pulling power. Turns out a major chipper manufacturer hold the patent on the motor and they make the HDP 4000 for them.
It’s easy to have ample control over the speed between throttle and having it set on the high flow circuit. The indent can be an issue if one doesn’t realize it’s engaged and they take their hands off expecting it to stop. It’s a power in/out with a manual free spool, if any manufacturers are listening it would be much better to have power in and auto free spool. If winching a tree over and it wraps around another you can give the mini quite a ride!

Wow, that is fast watching your videos. I sure wish the winch on my 12xp had a gear selector or something, one for high speed and one for power. I think Bandit rates it at 5,000 pounds pull and the machine weighs around 5,500. I regularly pull about as much as it can handle and wish I had more power at times... and of course more speed at other times.

Not to derail too much but it’s very very fast for a hydraulic winch. Never maxed it out as it will drag the mini, but there are some cool systems with the power in/out and being able to track with a second system tied to the mini’s D ring. Basically a half assed double winch system.
