Notch Rook

I just got a new Rook pulley. Like any new toy, I shredded the box and dug right in. I think I am a little disappointed.

Should I climb on this thing? Are they all like this? Maybe swap for a DMM?

Part of this is just that I'm a little concerned about how to do a safety check as it wears.

I was given a Rook about a year ago. Used it as a lanyard adjuster for the whole time, no real complaints. I do love the little rubber grommets that hug your biener.
To be honest with you tho I don't think it will ever replace my hitch climber pullie. I am a huge fan of midline attach-ability with all of my.hard wear.
I just switched out my pullie and hitch lanyard for a ART Positioner swivel and am digging it.

Can you see if the play in yours is similar to the video in the last link? If the rough edges and pulley axle play are just how things are, I'm ok with that. I can keep an eye on them because I can see them.
Concerning the swivel, I'd like to be able to inspect it before each use. My "off the cuff" analysis is that the new side to side play is so great that I don't know how I would know if it was failing. If someone had handed me a scuffed dirty old one and told me to inspect it before use, I would have condemned it. I can't see into the swivel, so the only data point I have is play. Any data you can provide would help.

I’d send it back. However if only used at a tending point and the rigging plate is bomber I’d use it for that. I WOULD NOT use it on my bridge or suspension point. With the slop in the axle, and bearings of the swivel it would only wear faster. Even if it’s safe I’d call it junk

@oldoakman, I have to agree, I don't think anything will ever replace my hitch climber. For DdRT that is.
But back to the main point, that video is alarming.

You know, this is kind of alarming, I almost exclusively use Rock Exotica hardwear and have never had any issues. However this is not the first time I have heard of QC issues with Notch branded gear. Another member was commenting on gate issues on some 'bieners.
While I do like having an affordable option on gear, the price can not sacrifice safety.

Mine has virtually no side to side play. I'll sell it to you.

That is enough for me. If there are ones out there that don't have that play, I'm not risking it. I also don't like a product that is potential life support that has a defect that makes it so I can't monitor the wear over its life.

It's going back. I was told the "techs can have a look at it can see if there is anything wrong with it". Allegedly if they can't determine if there is a problem, they will ship it back. If they arrive at that conclusion, I'm going to tell them to keep it.

The customer service guy obviously didn't believe a word I said, but I guess that is good. I'd be much more alarmed if he had heard of this problem 10 times.

Yea, I use some of their stuff too. From another prospective, I searched, checked reviews, and looked on the net anywhere I could think of and I could not find anyone with this problem. There was plenty of other talk about the rook/hydra pulley, but nothing about quality, defects, or failure. Sometimes problems are isolated, and I hope this one is.

I checked all three of mine (1x RE Hydra, 2x SherrillTree Rook) and there is a little play, but not as much as your video shows. One of the ROOKs is well used, and it has slightly more play, but not much. Some play is to be expected, and all of my Omni-Block and DMM pulleys have a little bit, too. Remember, there are dissimilar metals in the construction, and bearings. There has to be some play to allow for heat expansion and contraction, limit the amount of unloaded friction so things move, and to allow for bearing preload/stiffness requirements.

Thank you for checking your pulleys for play too. I hope they aren't going to just tell me it is fine, and that I am just being picky. I have other pulleys, including a worn out DMM (not HC) that have a little play. I also have a swivel that is quite worn. I wasn't expecting press fitted and pre-loaded with no play. I was expecting something that didn't make me question it's integrity in the first 120 seconds of ownership. Most people would have likely used it without any question. I'm likely being paranoid, but it seems like a lot of play. I may take a dial indicator and check it tonight.

Don't be afraid to send it back if you think it is excessive. Ask them to sort through their stock and send you one with tighter construction. I'm sure they'll be happy to do that, as they won't want a Rock Exotica product to get a bad rap, and neither will RE. I'm pretty sure you'll have no trouble getting a replacement.

They're very nice, useful pulleys and lots tougher than you'd expect. I've seen them used for rigging applications that made me cringe, but they never seem to break unless you go full bore looney tunes with them.
