Newbie splicing question

Howdy ya’ll! I am building a rope swing with 3/4” stable braid. The swing is just the rope with overhand knots tied at intervals. It will be about 8’ off the ground. Brand new to splicing and here are my newbie thoughts:
1. I want to splice the rope around a thimble which I will connect to an eye bolt drilled into the sugar maple limb.

2. I need a 16” fid I think. Is there a diy solution or should I just buy one?

3. Can I splice the thimble while it is inserted into the eye bolt?

I have watched the Samson video on stable braid splicing and read the instructions as well. Thanks!

Yes you can splice around the thimble with the eye bolt already in the thimble. Just follow those Samson instructions but remember to feed the cover and core around the thimble and through the eye of the bolt before you start your bury. As for fids I've only used homemade wire fids. This does mean that you have to make all of your measurements with a tape measure or ruler instead of the fid lengths.

You can do what you're thinking of assuming the eye on the bolt is big enough. Thimbles can be installed on eye bolt. 2 pair channel locks, grab legs of thimble and twist opposing directions. If too rugged, try hammering it on.

Don't buy a 16" fid. Look up wire fids on this site. That will work.

Honestly though, you could just tie a bowline knot and whip/seize the working end to the standing part of the rope.

Thanks! After thinking it through I’ll go the bowline route like you suggested. I still want to splice though. Any recommendations for someone starting out?

Stable braid is a pretty easy double braid to splice, and I've found that the larger diameters are easier than smaller diameters.
