Haven't worked in it yet, so I haven't seen how much crap they can pick up. I did put on gloves and play with the buckle. If you roll your up so the end of the thumb ends up perpendicular to the buckle when you press the button, there is plenty of room to get the other piece of the buckle out. But you're right, with the thumb flat against the buckle or with poorly fit gloves, it's almost impossible to get the thing apart.
