Anyone get one routinely or buy them for the crew?

Both of my crew members have had pinched nerves in the last 2-3 weeks. One happened at work while he was just pulling out a rope away from the tree that was to be pulled over. Very low force. He didn't want to go to the doctor and just planned on resting. The other came to work but couldn't really work. I paid for them to get each get a massage at the time of their problem.

I figure that we all work our bodies hard, and so it would be a good benefit to offer them.

The second one got sick from the massage, he said. I guess pushing out a lot of built up toxins. Both felt better from the body work.

The second employee said that the massage therapist told him that he was ruining his muscles, getting all these little bunches in the fibers, shortening the muscles. She said that he needs to drink 3x's as much water and stretch twice as much as he does now.

Funny, it seems like someone already told them this, and that they should warm-up and stretch (getting paid to do it) before starting work, after breaks, and throughout the day, and that they need to drink lots of water, as it flushes their body. Something about it being more important to monitor how much liquid comes out of their bodies, not only how much goes in. Funny, I wonder who that was...but now a professional massage therapist says so, and it sinks in. If only I could remember who says that day in and day out.

Massages around here are about $45-60 per hour, but I bet there might be a slight discount if you bought 5 or 10 sessions for employees. I imagine that massage therapists are suffering in this economy. There are often MTs bartering their services, too.

We have used massage therapists in the past. We set up monthly days with a therapist to come to the shop ($200 for three hours). The therapist comes to the shop and sets up a chair in the foreman's quarters. It is not intensive, but certainly sets up a contact that each individual can pursue if they want. The company that does this for us give discounts for our employees as well. I think that this type of thought is forward thinking and I'm sure your crew appreciates it.

Hey southsonund, do you participate in the morning stretch? Sometimes telling isn't as effective as doing.

During a hockey tournament in Ontario we had a local massage school provide their services between games. It was amazing. Played much better than without.

Now to get some rubbin' here!

Not Morning stretches, morning warm-ups, and stretches throughout the day and on the way home.

I thought about bringing the wife's Yoga Booty Ballet, but thought that was over the top, so only Richard Simmons' Stretching to the Oldies.

But seriously, yes I do it, I know I need to do it. I am always stressing proper lifting techniques, safe work practices, double-TIP whether its a chainsaw or handsaw, training on the newest techniques that I learn, etc.

I do try to lead by example, and put it into the occasional safety meeting (had the same crew for a while, so they aren't weekly).

My wife once gave me a gift certificate for some yoga classes. I was a bit apprehensive but when I finally got around to it I could not believe how much it helped at work! I was moving faster, more flexible, not getting hurt as much, just all around better climbing!
Another perk: yoga girls! great scenery.

I'll probably get as much grief for the yoga classes here as I did with my co-workers but what the hell.
And sorry for the derail

Good idea taitree.
I just happen to be a massage therapist up here in Saskatchewan. Giving your crew treatments is a great way to get them informed about what's going on with their bodies. Often one doesn't know how a body part feels until someone presses into it.
If your crew likes the treatments maybe you could pay a portion. That could encourage more visits.
Like Robinia says, yoga can be just as beneficial. How's this for a crazy idea. You and your crew go to a yoga class together at the end of the week. Friday afternoon yoga is a great way to end the week and everyone will benefit. It would be cheaper than massage tx's too. And the scenery ...
