Lightning Struck Pecan

Looking for any help or ideas to save this tree for a good friend and client. Pretty close to half of this pecan tree, appx 30" dbh, 80' height, and 60' spread. The tree branches into 3 main leads about 20' up. One of the leads has no green left at all, 0ne lead has about 1/2 green, and one lead is fully green. The bark is peeled off all the way down about 18" wide.

Oh, wait, I see now, the pic was sideways.

When was the strike? It looks pretty well calloused.

I you haven't already, do the usual things to encourage health and reduce stress, RCX, mulch, regular watering, root invigoration...

Probably have to remove the dead lead but that's going to leave balance issues. I can't tell if it has targets but if not, leave it until you know the if the tree is recovering or continuing to decline.

I think removal has to be an option, it's in a bad way. It would suck though.

What's the rainfall status around it. We're in full-on drought and lots of trees, including pecans are retreating and dropping foliage. Every blackhaw I've seen has half brown leaves, every dogwood is shriveling and the leaves are like paper. Most folks are missing it because the drought is only now making news.

The lightning strike was in the early spring. And yes we are in quite a drought here as well! My friend really would like to save the tree, but you are right removing it would suck! It is a magnificent tree!

Thanks Blinky! The client and I have decided to give it until spring to see if a hopefully wet winter brings some life back to it. If not I have one heck of a removal!

Well, pretty much 1/2 of the tree is affected. Light pruning I think is best left until the foilage starts to come back next year, so as to better assess the extent of the damage.
