Laser pointer

Does anyone have a laser pointer they can recommend? I’ve been through a couple of the cheaper ones which is just a waste of time. I need one to point out branches to homeowners. I think red is the better color.

I'm in the same boat and will be interested in what comes up. I have an older one that I got from treestuff 6 or7 years ago that is great but that is my personal one. I have a Notch one at work that is junk. Been looking at on or two at Forestry Suppliers that may be ok but are pricey

I think a green 5mw laser will give you much better daytime visibility. I bought one for astronomy years ago. In the dark, it makes a visible line in the sky, handy for pointing out things in the sky to others. I've not seen a red laser bright enough for decent visibility in full sun, but they may have them now. Haven't looked to see what's available in years. I do remember seeing very expensive ones that could pop balloons and light cigarettes!

A good laser pointer is on my list as well, and I've tried and failed 3 times to get one.

-First I bought a $9 'china special' on Amazon and it practically didn't work.
-So I bought the Notch one and it was the same crap quality as the $9 Amazon one, just said 'Notch' on it. Worked about half of the time and often at only half brightness. Straight up frustrating and embarrassing to try and use in front of potential customers.
-Returned that and they sent me a replacement 'Notch' pointer and it was just as shit as the first. At that point I just gave up.

Green seems to be the way to go and I think for quality you need to get into the beefy 'laser nerd' type of lasers from the dedicated laser hobbyist websites. I'd looked into them briefly but got overwhelmed with decisions and never bought one. Maybe this thread will finally be the reminder to get me to take care of it once and for all.

Green are powerful.
So useful, communicative, and time saving.

Ouch! Thanks for the info.

There seems to be a gap between the crap ones that last a couple of months and the ones that have to be registered by the FAA! We can put people on the moon.....

I love this one. It is waaay more powerful than the sherrilltree pointer. This thing is like a light saber

My buddy got one off of ebay $12 and you can easily see that dot 500 yards away. I have never really felt the need for one.

They show one with a different name but looks identical, called a Gexing beam pointer. $24.95 Don’t know. This one wasn’t expensive and I’ve had it a year now with no problems. Super bright, easy to see in daylight,

But see, this is the problem with laser pointers on Amazon. Unknown products from unknown venders with unknown quality. The venders and brands change names and appear and disappear quickly, sometimes it's actually because the lasers don't meet US legal specs (more powerful than technically allowed from what I read on a laser forum once). Buying one is a crapshoot.

Green light. I don’t know about laser laws, this thing is pretty bright but I doubt I’ll encounter a situation where I could get in trouble with it. I don’t feel the need to blind aircraft pilots, although I did have a lot of fun making some wild turkeys dance around

I probably got lucky with this one. Hey, shoot me a pm if you don’t mind. I couldn’t find a way to start a conversation with you

Have you tried using it with a cat?

Private message sent. I believe the little 'letter' icon in the upper right should show it.

Agree with the green color choice.

Got mine off eBay a long time ago after an arb supply laser couldn't be seen in daylight.

Don't shine any of them in people or animals eyes. A lot of the ones on ebay got pulled because they were too powerful for US regs.

This is the one I use. I am pleased with it. I broke my first by accidentally injecting the usb port with grease. I sent my second through the washing machine and it is now dead. I have one left. I'm noticing that it is out of stock, but these specs may be useful while you search for one. I like recharging it in my rig. It is compact. I can see the dot very well on any tree I am discussing with a client.
