ladder strikes again

So, yesterday I had a full day of oak pruning. In the morning I heard another chainsaw in the area, which is not uncommon. But later in the day I was about 40 feet up when I hear someone start screaming bloody murder about a block away. I realized right away that it was coming from the same area I heard the chainsaw. I came out of the tree and jumped in the truck with my ground guy not knowing what to expect. Found the guy still screaming laying on the ground with a badly fractured leg just below the knee, bone was sticking out of his pants. Called 911 and tried to comfort him till the police got there, thankfully it didn't take long. He was working by himself off a ladder with no harness, rope, or PPE. Top cut a 6 inch limb that I assume swung down and knocked him off the ladder, which was barely held up by a twig right over top of him. Not really sure of his story but based on his pickup truck I think he might be a roofing contractor. Looking back on it I wish I would have asked some questions but didn't have much time before the cops got there. I was a little shaken up, mostly from the sound of his screams, I'm just glad I found him on the ground and not in the air.

When you called 911 did you ask for Cops or an Ambulance. Just seems odd that they would send Cops to an injury accident.

In urban area's, cops will get there 1st, 95% of the time. Cops are dispatched to most ambulance calls to help secure the area.

Ambulance but I think the cop was in the area because it wasn't two minutes after I called and he was there. Ambulance showed up about 5 minutes after that.

My hats off to you for responding like you did. That is 1 lucky man you helped. Outstanding job!!

haha, no that didn't occurred to me at the time. It was a good test of my nerves in an emergency situation. Norm, I think he is more lucky that he didn't land on his head, or his saw!

Wow...good for you..bad for him..maybe he will leave this to the professionals next time! He learned a very valuable lesson a very hard way. Good thing you were in the area. I cant believe how many do it your selfers there are.

Driving home from wrok yesterday i seen an elderly man topping his Bradford Pear via ladder. I stopped offered my service and was refused. He had his ladder tied to the tree though. I still was nervous about him being up there as I left. He was raking his yard this morning so all is good.
