Knife in tree

Do you carry a knife in the tree? What kind, and how do you carry it? I carry a little swiss army knife in my pants pocket, but its not readily accessible. What have you used a knife for, if you carry?

I usually carry a leatherman wave when climbing, on the ground I carry an additional knife always. Can't find my Leatherman right now though, I hope I don't need a new one. I keep it in a MOLLE sheath on the TM right leg loop.20191029_130742.webp

Yeah, I thought it might have been discussed before. I tried searching knife, but didn't see anything relevant in the first half dozen or so posts. Should have searched more, i guess.

I like the leatherman idea. Gives you the pliers in addition to a blade.
I like the sheepsfoot serrated blade on the leatherman for rope cutting and rescue purposes. The pliers are nice if you use screwgates and close one under load. If I have a chainsaw with me, I keep an IFAK on my saddle, which also includes trauma shears.

Also for a multi-tool-plier, I much prefer Gerber products over Leatherman.
Much better quality, & more durable. (although mine are old !)

I use a “bear claw” it’s a small fixed blade which is pretty solid in the scabbard. I’d much prefer a knife that locks closed than one that locks open.
Kershaw makes a folder which is a spring assist but has a locking tab, haven’t had very good luck with them due to the lock breaking on me.

I know Gerber used to be great, and I think they're getting good again, but I haven't had any luck with them personally, except for a military hook cutter. I've heard great things about some of their US made knives like the strongarm.

Myerchin... on a 3' lanyard made of throwline, which is attached to dittybag. I just drop it back in the dittybag and stuff the little bit of lanyard in there when I'm done using it. The pliers on these are designed for loosening/tightening shackle pins, which is my most common use of it. Also, of course, good for cutting a line or untying a knot.

Owned a myerchin in highschool, loved it till the lock gave out. We found Marlin spikes are great for clearing pipes...dude. What is the point of knives in trees, seriously? Unless you are the arborist I saw in Nicaragua chopping out a 12" dia log with a machete to clear the powerlines. MF was a boss!

dynamic cabling. Finishing off a saw nicked rope. Poking and probing beetle galleries. Sure a handsaw can do a lot a knife can do, but best tool for many jobs.
