Kboom vs. All terrain Crane??

when we bought the kboom, the reason we went with the dealer we did was that they had enough spare parts to build the crane from their stock room, not so true, ive been waiting on some parts since christmas, and i still may wait another 2 weeks. i think thats just poor service on the dealership's part, i mean a flight from italy is what 15 hours or something, maybe less?

but anyway the reason i'm constantly replacing bolts is the camelback suspension on the mack, its as rough as rubberblock or worse.

I would say one drawback to a k-boom is that at some point osha will stick there big nose in and make it illegal to operate the crane from the tree.You can take that to the bank.

I doubt they would even look at the truck without a very hefty bill in the mail on the way to me.

It is a weak point, but I think it's designed to be a weak point. If you do something stupid and touch the hose chain holder against something it breaks the bolt(s) rather than ripping the mounts from the boom therefore damaging the boom. I've up sized the bolts a little bit, but I wouldn't go any bigger for that reason.
 
I would say one drawback to a k-boom is that at some point osha will stick there big nose in and make it illegal to operate the crane from the tree.You can take that to the bank. (as stated by 6t56).

Why would an option that's proven to be very safe be taken away?? When I spoke at a conference I mentioned that it has proven to be MORE SAFE FOR ME! FOR ALMOST TWO DECADES! WHEN I HIRED OPERATORS THEY NEARLY KILLED ME!!!! I don't want my life in the hands of someone that might have a short lapse of attention. If I ever have an accident due to poor operation it will be my own fault. And that's the way I like it. Everyone should have a choice. I ALSO STRONGLY STATED THAT OPERATING FROM IN THE TREE IS NOT FOR EVERYONE!!!!

I hope your right mike,I hope they don't make it illegal.Just remember your talking about a government agency here, they don't always make policy that makes sense.I'm just saying in my opinion if someone is thinking about spending half a mill on a K boom and planning on running it from the tree, maybe they should take into consideration the fact that osha could at anytime put a stop to that practice.Personally I don't think osha should even exist and I agree everyone should have a choice,I'm not implying that anything in particular is safe or unsafe.
 
And Diesel engines may be forbidden one day. Does that mean we shouldn't buy anything diesel because "one day" it will become outlawed? Until then being paranoid about "one day" while your competitors are considering every angle that's available "today"
 
mike, its obvious that you have an excellent situation with you k-boom. and you as the owner have a twenty year safety record to back it up. however, if an employee were to be running the crane with remote in the tree or on the hook or riding the hook with a load attached or etc. and had an ACCIDENT where there was injury or death that would open the biggest can of OSHA worms this industry ever saw. it would make the european foolishness with their safety laws look reckless.

Not really an apples to apples comparison.Also most businesses definitely take into account regulations coming down the pike.hey do what u like, I hope it's never outlawed!!All I did was respond to this guy's post with my legitimate opinion,I AM NOT ADVOCATING AN OSHA RULE AGAINST OPERATING CRANE FROM TREE.

Most businesses do consider regulations coming down the pike and currently there are no regulation policies being composed in regards to remote control in tree operations. The focus has been on requiring licensing to operate and riding the hook in regards to tree care. Where have you heard any discussions of OSHA forbidding remote control in tree besides this thread? Inquiring minds would like to know

Nowhere but if I was gonna bet 500k(cost of a k-boom)I would put it on an outlaw within 10 yrs,just my opinion.
 
I agree with 6t56 no one wants it but they do as they please ! some pencil pusher who doesn't work for a living will get a bug up his butt and there you have it , and they sneak rules in so if we don't look ahead to the "what ifs" than we are wearing rose colored glasses. Oh and limb control are you speaking as a kboom owner operator ?

The remote control option is what $20k? And if 6t56 is right that this becomes outlawed by osha( we can thank him for initiating the discussion) If you cant make up the 20k in ten years time I do agree with him, you shouldnt order the remote. In fact, you shouldnt order a kboom at all.

Looks like your a soon to be owner but not yet, first time owner? Ever put yourself in the tree? Ever operated kboom before ? I ask because some on this thread have and do and we have seen the changes out there, OSHA is not out there coming after us, they on the other hand are looking to understand what we do and how we do it , I know this first hand as I am part of a group of certified tree experts in New Jersey that was asked by OSHA to help train there inspectors so if by chance this ever happens ( they are not going to hear it from me and I don't foresee that but ) it is always good to look ahead and be prepared .
 
First red, then blue, then blue and white,then yellow...now just white...do they come in maroon? Would make that 1.3 million dollar 2355 easier to handle!
 
If you use the $20,000 number for a remote and operate it from a tree for 1 year then you got your money back and then some + you still have the kboom!
