Just a little cottonwood for your viewing pleasure

The tree was in serious decline. We were lowering branches to save the lawn..as we had to fix any damage....

At about 0.55 is the problem branch, that easily weighed 1000-1500 lb. As the rigging point was in small diameter wood, we didn't want to risk breaking it out, which would have taken Dave to the ground...and that is not acceptable, now is it?! First we discussed taking 2 wraps and just letting it run.....fast...but what if the rope hockled and jammed? not likely. Dave could have worked out and cut it where it was smaller and shorter. But why. After he agreed that he was scared, which is unheard of, we decided to do the smart thing, and let it fly. Minor lawn damage...there was a lot more than had to be forked up and top dressed with some soil.

(Better alternative would have been to move the rigging down to just above that limb....where it woulda been bomber....Still would have meant 3 wraps on the porty......)

there was another problem that Scott, who was handling the line, should have noticed. He stated that the rope was burning on the PW....but actually it was running on a burl right above the PW....I didn't realize it until we only had one left to lower.....

We had to bring in a couple yards to fill the hole (from grinding the stump) anyhow.

Re: Just a little cottonwood for your viewing plea

Some more. Keep in mind that this tree was far smaller than the two on Mercer Island that I posted about on Norm's thread..instead of starting a new one....my bad......

One mo.....ho dee do--

--or, please...

Pullin' da top, which may not look like it, but is close to 60 feet...

So, that means I was off, the tree could have been 146 feet tall...

Which could mean the Mercer Is. biggies are even taller....

Re: Just a little cottonwood for your viewing plea

It's Dave's signature helmet...it's rated and approved.

I'm not sure the self loader's scales were accurate...but he said the three 20.5 foot logs weighed 25,000 lb! which would mean it weighed about 90 lb per cubic foot! maybe less, as that isn't allowing for the butt swell or bark weight...so, say 75-80 lb...that's still more than live oak!!

Almost always 1/2 inch, either True Blue or double braid....or even cheaper stuff, old lifelines etc for the light duty stuff that is so prevalent with all our conifers.

Anything larger is overkill unless the load is over 1000 pounds or you're negative blocking.....

Though, 9/16th isn't that much heavier....however, my current normal semi-static 9/16th somehow got a cut in the middle---mighta happened on that big poplar job.

Nice work! Great pics as always. By the way. looking forward to meeting/hearing you in February here in MN.

Re: Fun felling/removal job from a month ago.....

The last of a group of six, this 110 footer was about 40-42 inches on the butt, with a good six feet of back lean...with a house directly behind it. We used our spectra core rope, which has near zero stretch and is rated at 19,000 pounds tensile strength, at 9/16th size. We pulled with our dump truck loaded with 18 yards of chips, so had about 20,000 pounds of traction, and on grabby frozen turf

A delicate moment, for sure, but over it came!!

I'd estimate the tree to weigh 12 to 14000 pounds, and to have had perhaps 2000-3000 pounds of back weight that we had to counteract with the pull.
