LaKeesha's 18th Birthday

Today my baby girl's 18th birthday....... I be so glad that this be my

last child support payment! Month after month, year after year, all

those payments!

So I call my baby girl, LaKeesha, to come to my house, and

When she get there, I say, "Baby girl, I want you to take dis check over

to yo momma house and tell her dis be the last check she ever be gettin'

from me, and I want you to come back and tell me the _expression that's on yo

momma's face."

So my baby girl she take the check over to her. I be anxious

to hear what she say and what she look like. Baby girl walk through the

door, I say, "Now what yo momma say 'bout dat?" She say to tell you that

"You aint my daddy .......... and watch the expression on yo face....."

Is that supposed to be a white guy telling a joke from the perspective of a black guy? Sorry, I don't mean to be too bleeding-heart, but when I see racism passed off as a joke, I have to say, THAT AIN'T FUNNY!

I didn't write it and I'm sorry if it offended you. Maybe this version is better for you./forum/images/graemlins/boohoo.gif

yeah, that's fine with me. Why didn't you write it that way in the first place? The fact that you knew just how to edit out the offending parts suggests you knew exactly what you were doing, despite your "who me?" attitude in this follow-up.

im missing something, what was racist about that?

[/ QUOTE ]
A white guy using "ebonics" suggests he's not only making a joke, but also commenting on Black society. It's not a favorable comment. There's no reason not to just write the name as "jennifer" and use his own syntax (as he did in the follow-up) unless he's implying something beyond just a humorous story.

Maybe I'm too sensitive, but I think it's closer to the truth to say often white folks aren't sensitive enough. This is the sort of under-the-rable, plausible-deniability racism that prevents minorities from feeling like an equal part of society despite legal advances that have improved things dramatically since Jim Crow.

You are reading into it too much. Its a joke, get over it.

I'm not implying anything than just a funny joke. Thats all. As of this hour 40 people have opened it and you are the only one with a problem. Liberal thinking I guess.

I sincerely apologize if I offended you. Maybe next time you see a post authored by me, don't open it. I have better things to do than to start a pissing match with a treehugger.

Dave, I'm not trying to stir a pot here, I take being falsely accused of being a racist quite seriously.

This is Tom the person not Tom the host speaking. My TB hat is off.

I'll say that I agree with Kieth.

It can't be said that "it's a joke" and let it go at that. This is a pretty complex issue and beyond my time to sit at a keyboard to explain my views. Keith did a good job in just a few spare words.

Also, it isn't just "liberal" or PC thinking. I've had discussions with some very conservative people who agree with Keith's writing too.

TreeDr.,

If you feel I've falsely accused you of being a racist, I apologize. My intent was not to say YOU are a racist, but rather that your presentation of this JOKE includes implied racism. Perhaps it was inadvertent, but I reiterate that you knew exactly what to do to "fix" the joke, so perhaps you are experiencing a bit of denial. I just feel an obligation to point these things out because so often they slip by and some of us don't ever notice while others feel unwelcome in what I believe to be a very welcoming community to all kinds of people.

In short, whatever your intent, when you "speak" in ebonics for humorous intent (as a white guy), you convey a racist attitude, and I hope you will be more aware of this in future.

Read the description of this forum........Be warned - this forum may not be for the thin skinned!

You should let it go already.

I'm sure you are a great guy, but you fit the thin skinned description to a tee. Maybe that part of the forum is not for you. I seem to recall your anti-fun confrontations in past posts.

I don't have a problem with your thinking, I believe we all were raised with the same strong moral upbringings, but I do have a problem with the over-analytical actions and responses. If you don't like it, move on already. Don't pick a fight.

You have every right to post a response to something you may disagree about as I have every right to post a joke that I unintentionally offended 3 people on this site. For that I apologized already. Lets move on.

You didn't call me a racist?

" but when I see racism passed off as a joke"

I am the "passer" no? So I guess I am a "racist".

BTW, my Mother sent me that so I guess she is a "racist" too.

I don't like you and I wish Tom would remove this ENTIRE post before I go ballistic. If I get suspended, so be it, it will be worth my defense as a so-called "racist".

See you at the next Trade Show?

The joke belittled and stereotyped Black people. That makes it racist. Blacks have been hoping and praying for 500 years that WE'LL get over it.

To say you're falsely accused is like the falling-down-drunk who insists he's not an alcoholic. Maybe you can't see it, but it's pretty obvious to the rest of us.

That you can apologize for offending shows that you're a better man than many. Now, if you could just acknowledge that you goofed, we can all move on.

Now I'm an Alcoholic? What's next from you guys. You throw every name at me in the book. The simple "treehugger" term is widely used to describe a liberal dope that pisses and moans about everything and can't get it done because they spend too much time pissing and moaning.

Hey Rescue Robbie, I will put this in the same format you seemed to take so long to do...

Q#1 The joke belittled and stereotyped Black people. That makes it racist. Blacks have been hoping and praying for 500 years that WE'LL get over it.

I guess your not PC. African American is accepted now. Not Black, I guess you have a pc issue now, not me.

Q#2 The fact that you would use name-calling ("treehugger") to put down someone who called a spade a spade, simply demonstrates that your prejudice is well-rounded.

Q#3

Are you qualified to make this judgement? M.D. or ISA CA? (if that)

Q#4 That you can apologize for offending shows that you're a better man than many. Now, if you could just acknowledge that you goofed, we can all move on.

I have no intention to say I "goofed", because I have not. I have stood my ground against a few who do not agree with my intentions of posting a funny joke.

You don't have to like me.

Regarding your specific point, you passed along a joke you saw as harmless. You didn't write it, apparently, or alter it. So I'm happy to believe you are not a racist, but rather that you inadvertently spread a little racism with the joke. Which I pointed out already.

I saw an issue I felt it was important to raise and raised it. I defended myself with what I see as valid points. It had nothing to do with me being unable to move on--I've let plenty of posts pass by without response even though I disagreed or didn't like them. It has to do with my desire to make this community a place where anyone may feel welcome, rather than a whites-only boys club. You don't have to agree with me (I never imagined you would) but you have to accept my right to say what I think (Read the description of this forum........Be warned - this forum may not be for the thin skinned!).

You responded with defensiveness and name-calling. It seems to me you're the one who is thin-skinned. I couldn't care less if you think I'm a liberal (I am) or a treehugger (I am, in more ways than one), or if you like me. I'm inclined to think I wouldn't like you either, if we ever met, but I'll reserve judgment until that day. But I'm not thin-skinned, and I won't be bullied into backing down because you call me names. I think you are the one who needs to move on.
