I’m guessing that it’s the inner diameter of the thimble, and I’m also guessing it’s the captive dmm thimbles which is being referred to.
Yes, a captive thimble.

Thimbles remain at a constant diameter. Rings will always vary as the cordage that goes through them will change under load and with use.

Thimbles are reversible. The “big” side is only .5mm or so bigger than the “small” side. This enhances functionality but in my mind more importantly, eliminates the chance of misconfiguration.

Thimbles retrieve more reliably (see point one)
