Today I was on my way to dump a load of wood chips and we encountered a lone logger in a jam. The pic is not that good, but when I stopped to investigate I could see a large Black cherry laying on 4.8kv powerlines which were all piled up on his skidder! By the time I arrived on the scene the logged had already cut some limbs to clear the road. I encountered him to let him know that that tree and skidder could be energized! He acknowledged me and said, "I'm a sheriff, but I only do this on occasion." I asked him what happened, and he said he was wedging the tree over and was having a hard time getting the tree to move. He said he decided to cut more of the hinge and ended up cutting through the hinge. The tree spun off the stump and came back on the powerlines, breaking two crossarms, and bringing the wires and tree down onto his skidder! He told me that he saved the easiest tree for last! I told him complacency can kill! This will probably be the last time I get to lecture a cop...Oh and to top things off he was logging alone...
