Huge Weeping Japanese Maple

The photo does not show off this maple for how nice it really is. I'll look at my other camera's photos after I get down to hiking tonight and tomorrow. First time I ever worked for these folks. This weeping Japanese maple has a 15 foot canopy spread and is 14 feet tall. Very solid wood and no visible disease issues. Probably the most impressive looking weeping Japanese maple I've ever pruned. It was a very enjoyable morning.

This looks like the kind of tree, that if it could be moved, could easily bring $20,000 or more. This image does not convey it's size.

Hershey Gardens in Hershey PA have several specimens that are quite impressive also. I have a photo of my daughter sitting in one that I'll have to try to scan in and post. Mat take me a few days to do that.

An old customer of ours had a Green leaf Japanese maple, not a cut leaf/lace leaf, etc, just a plain jane variety - the spread had to be 60 feet or more. I was under it for a good 15 minutes before I realized what it was. Big old mansion with 20-30 acres in the main line outside of philly = big dollar estate. I have to get a picture of my Japanese maple on here. I've never seen another one with the growth like it.
How old would somebody guess the tree pictured is?

Beautiful tree! Could you maybe post a pic in full bloom?

Will be glad too. I'd like to see this one with full leaves, and in autumn too. All 4 seasons if I can get them.

Probably about the same age as the fellow in the pic. I'm guessing about 100? ;-)

mdvaden,

I love it when the structure of an ornamental Maple such as that is exposed, so often they never get a chance, just a tangled blob of a crown on a stick, full of interior deadwood, gardener just runs hedge-shears over it once a year...

That tree has been excellently cared for in the past, it is good to see that it's care has now fallen into the hands of a specialist such as yourself.

Just a thought...Any way to find out who brought that tree up so well? Maybe they've retired and have a client list of fine ornamentals that can use a real pro to take over.

Kind of a dream of mine, thought I'd throw it out there.

Hey MD
What are your plans if any concerning the maintenance and care of such a specimen? Purhaps soil samples, mulching, fertilizing, root stimulator, folilar feedings? Curious

Today when photographing it again, I remembered your request. Here you go, 6 months later.

One of the things I miss about the PNW is the Japanese maples and pruning them. Talk about instant gratification, they look so good when you get all the dead wood out. They grow here in the Bluegrass, but not like that.

Thinking back, the number of weeping Japanese maples, where I've needed an orchard ladder to reach the top, I could probably count on two hands.
