A friend of mine bought a Homelite homeowner saw. It was dolls so I sharpen it for them. When I went to start it and try it out I saw the directions on how to start the saw. Here is a picture of the directions the second step is to disengage the chain break

1. Did you try to start using the instructions ?
2. We must be missing some info on that saw ?

Yes it is brand new. She cut a stump with it. 1 cut and dull. I started it per the instructions and with the brake engaged. It starts both ways.

Here is the owners manual
http://manuals.homelite.com/system/files/6844/original/UT10549_69_89_794_trilingual_01.pdf?2012

This is copied directly from the manual

Push choke lever to RUN position.

Pull starter grip and rope until engine runs.

NOTE: Allow the saw to run in this position 15- 30 seconds, depending upon the temperature.

Depress the trigger release and squeeze and release the throttle trigger to return the engine to idle.

CAUTION:

Failure to release partial throttle when chain brake lever is in the brake position will result in serious damage to the unit. Never squeeze and hold the throttle trigger while the chain brake is

Sounds to me like it starts at high idle according to the directions.
in the brake position.

I sent an info request to Homelite !

Today I spent ~1 hr calling HomeLite Corp (Cus Serv) several times, attempting to help get clarification on this.
Their phone system is poor (disconnected, etc).

Today I got an e-mail reply that stated, I would have to "register" into their "Dashboard" account system ! ! ! to get my e-mail reply.
Nope ! Not going to happen !

None of the people I talked to (Cus Serv, Technicain, etc) knew what an "Arborist" was.

I asked several different people to connect me to a Cus Serv Superv.
Never Completed.

My father, 50 years ago, had a great running Homelite.

I quit.
