How does the rope runner pro compare to zig zag on ascending & descending?

Midline isn’t an issue when discussing ascent and descent. Midline attachment mainly comes into play during line installation, redirects (srs), and breakdown post-climb. After borrowing a chicane this week to try on my zigzag, I can deal with those inefficiencies in some scenarios. It’s super smooth. While I don’t like how Petzl ripped off the wrench without even a nod to Kevin, the chicane works well.
The rope runner pro requires adjustment, break in, and periodic oiling (which no one seems to read in the manual), but is a great device in both srs and mrs without extra pieces. It tends slack like no other device I’ve used. Midline attachment allows for retrieving bight redirects in srs without re-climbing.
Ultimately, the zigzag is the smoother, more straightforward device between the two in both srs and mrs. It requires a little more planning, but less maintenance and inspection. The rrp has three slic pins that must be inspected every time you use them. Some have put themselves in scary situations by not fully or properly installing the slic pins. Not a fault of the device- expert use only means just that, and we need to be honest with ourselves as to whether we qualify.

@metaspencer your a rrp guy, any input?
I used a friends zigzag with a chicane SRT for 10 minutes or so, never thought I could get up and down a rope so smooth in my life

I should mention, the one hang up I had with the chicane setup was the size. The rrp is a bit more compact.

Eh, I’m sold on how well the mechs gobble up slack when there’s rope weight, and how they tend manually. I used a hitch last week for the first time in a couple months. Great for in-tree maneuvers, but long descents and tending are not as consistent for me as with mechs.
Honestly I’m surprised by how much I’ve come to like mechs because I was a diehard rope-on-rope guy until this year. Now it’s either my rrp or zigzag. The wrench only comes out on two ropes, and those don’t get used often.
Though, a hh2 would be nice to have on hand.
Thank you for your input I love the zig zag but honestly not a fan of the chicane I would strongly recommend buying the Reon Rounds tether one of my climbers has it and it's way better then the chicane I'm sure there's not as much side loading in rec climbing but removals and trims it happens often and the chicane is not something I trust the RR tether is more ridgid and durable but costs $200 $50 more then the chicane imo worth the cost difference
But I appreciate the help I've been debating buying the RRP for the midline attachment figure it would be great to have but was curious about it's functionality I'm sold and thanks crimsonking will Def keep an eye on the system thanks for pointing out the maintenance required
I have the RRPro and 2 original runners from Kevin. You know what Ì reach for every climb? One of my 4 wrenches. Love runners on rec climbs but for work it is a wrench. My system tends like butter and eats rope as I ascend and wraps around branches without sideload issues. It is also compact AF.

I use the RRP daily but don't swear by it ... still looking for the perfect ("perfect"?) device
get your hands on a zigzag and chicane for a day, other than it not being midline attachable it is amazing
p.s you have to use a petzl carabiner for the chicane, as the hole in it is shaped to match a petzl biner

What hitch do you run...? Michoacan? I just started using the cataloan. Spelled wrong but wow it is as smooth as the michoacan. Really liking it

Look it up on YouTube...I seen this Cosmo hitch? On some guys page never heard of it so clicked on it. I couldn't exactly figure out how he tied it. So if anyone knows how to tie the Cosmo plz post a clear video plz. I want to try it out.
But anyway seen a video of the cataloan heard of it before but never tried it. The way this guy ties it makes it so easy to tie. Been using it for a few weeks and loving it. Runs smooth and tends great.
Try running a petrocan. ( Michoacán turned 180 degrees). In other words the down legs of your E2E are gonna be on the climbers side instead of away from the climber. When properly dialed it is as fast as lighting, eats slack almost like a mechanical, but has that sweetness that only a hitch based system can offer....
