I've been to India and had a good time hanging out with the coconut climbers.. they were amazing, using just a small loopie (either synthetic of made of inner bark)which went around their feet, as the only climbing aid, they could move up and down very quickly at will.. they wore only underpants and a small sheet wrap (called a lungi in the south). They carried a machete with a bent nail stuck in the end of the handle, used to clip it to their lungi.. When I first learned to wear one of those, I couldn't walk ten steps without it falling off.. How they could could climb trees with a machete hanging on theirs is beyond rational explanation! Their feet had these monster callouses from the loopie strap... One of the ground men told me that the climber could clean 100 trees a day, and I believe it from watching how fast they were..
