Position Available: Horticulture Coordinator
Classification: Full-time, Non-Exempt
Department: Collections & Facilities
General Summary: Assist Manager of Horticulture in the oversight of all horticultural displays, which includes assigned gardens, landscapes, and collections. Responsible for all aspects of the Seasonal Display Program (four season changes of annuals or décor in beds and containers). Oversee hiring and ongoing supervision of large seasonal work force (approximately 20 employees).
Job Qualifications
Previous Training and Experience
An Associate’s Degree in ornamental horticulture or related field, and three years of previous experience in garden or landscape installation and maintenance. Seasonal display experience is a requirement. Good knowledge of basic plant culture and disease/insect pest diagnostics under Midwestern conditions. Experience in a public garden is helpful. Ability to identify major plant genera and species, while also possessing knowledge of names and characteristics of a wide range of cultivated, ornamental plants. Must have strong supervisory skills. Ability to train personnel in the proper maintenance of plants. Must have understanding of equipment and tools, including their care and maintenance. Occasional weekend and evening work required.
Physical/Mental Requirements
Strong attention to detail and genuine passion for ornamental horticulture is a must. Enjoy working with the public. Possess strong organizational skills and the ability to communicate effectively in a verbal and written format. Good computer aptitude to manage and process information efficiently (word processing, spreadsheet, power point, and email). Must be physically able to routinely survey the gardens and landscapes on the grounds. Must have a valid Illinois Driver’s License; subject to an annual Motor Vehicle Report.
Working Conditions
1. Combined indoor (50%) and outdoor (50%) setting.
2. Requires some physical activity: lifting (up to 50 lbs.), bending, climbing stairs, carrying
(50 lbs.), sitting, standing, walking, and occasional travel by car, train and airplane.
