Hey Crafty Sewing Types!

I'm just a hobbyist and definitely not an expert, but the smallest thread I would use would be #69 which is about the heaviest most home machines will use.

Given a choice, I'll usually use polyester, as it holds up to UV whereas nylon degrades far faster. (Boats are made of polyester.)

This stuff is pretty tough. It's .9 mm nylon 3 strand. I've made a foot loop for a homemade knee ascender, and played with sewn eyes on rope and sewn loop runners. I haven't been entirely satisfied with my results yet, but I keep practicing with my speedy stitcher. Webbing is easy to sew, rope is much harder to make pretty looking eyes.

1" tubular nylon webbing can be bought bulk in 10 or 20 yards. Suitable for life support. Thus far I will trust a beer knot more than my sewing.
My speedy stitch of course came with the leather needles, where can I order regular ball point needles suitable for the Tex 400 threads? Thanks.

This post by @Jimmycrackcorn might just be the book answer. It contains a link to a product that needs no modification to fit in the Speedy Stitcher, and they are cheap, too.

I hope this helps.

Tim

Edit: Here's the link to the product from the other thread, for those who don't feel like jumping around. That other thread is well worth reading, though.

Also, a link to a PDF document from the Organ Needle company that explains things about ball point needles.

I’m just about ready to put a project under the needle, and have a couple sourcing q’s for those of you acquainted with the materials we often see in the trade. Disclaimer- nothing will be for rated use, only accessory, but needs to be extremely durable. @yoyoman , Casey (forget your handle), and others-

When sewing vinyl, cordura, and poly webbing, what thread type/size should I use? Different types for different materials?

Also, I’m finding that there are many types of flat polyester webbing. Is there one in particular that you find durable enough for regular use, yet thin (or thick) enough to work well with buckles and sliders? Right now I’m using 2” wide, if that makes a difference in your answers.

What are some good suppliers for more vinyl and cordura?

I have some materials through a trade, but don’t know their specs and sources. They are what I want, but I don’t know how to get more.
I sew up rope bags, daisy chain hardware straps, equipment covers ect. 1000 denier cordura, heavy canvas, netting, all manner of webstrap, denim, 16ga clear vinyl. I'm using a consew 227 cylinder bed machine with #136 bonded poly thread for the 1/4 inch and under fabrications and a cowboy cb3200 with #346 thread for the 1/4inch and thicker stuff. I get my webstrap and some hardware from strapworks.com. heavy fabrics and clips on Amazon. Sailright for basting tape.go to your local awning shop and car upholstery shop to pick their brains on local suppliers and sewing questions. I like to use forceps when I'm holding a bunch of awkward layers together. This helps me to accurately feed up close to the foot. Forceps at Fishing department at walmart or on eBay for cheapest. Bishe's tear meander adhesive is a great quick glue for prefabing stuff before sewing, as is a hot glue gun.
