Spent a couple days this fall working away on some folks pollarded trees - whole yard full. New one for me where I am, but fun climbing. The pile of 4' - 5' sticks were enormous and it left me wondering if they couldn't be used for something like fencing or privacy screening. I remember hearing long ago that both pollarding and coppicing were used to grow materials to be used this way in times past. Trees give us so much. This all left me feeling very "Euro" (have never seen this where I live but pollarded trees were all over France on a recent trip there).

His tool kit was interesting to me, as I often use a brush hook out surveying, a very useful tool.

The last portion ("Part Four: Heartwood") of "Wildwood -- A Journey Through Trees" by Roger Deakin is mostly about things along these lines, and they sound pretty cool. Led to me bookmarking https://www.hedgelaying.org.uk/ though I doubt I'll ever be industrious enough to attempt anything. It'd be awesome to re-create his living archway.

The book is overall hard to recommend. It's not *bad*, but it's a slow read. Interesting in many ways; made me keep my phone nearby to look up things I'd never heard of, some of them simply UK-isms but most about the natural world. A lot of subtle connections, a lot about living at nature's pace. I'd guess that naturalists would be the ones most into it. I'm glad I made the effort to read the whole thing. But it's definitely the opposite of a beach-read page turner
