Grillion as basal anchor

I know that the RIG would be the ideal mechanical basal anchor but I don't own one and I have a Grillion lying around collecting dust.
I can't find a reason why this wouldn't be an acceptable anchor device and I've found a video by Petzl using it as an adjustable anchor.
Grillion
I'm just looking for some feedback from the community with thoughts, concerns or experience.
Thanks

the Grillion/ Gri Gri is not approved to be anchored to a static object. It is something new they added in their instructions... no idea why, but most likely to sell more RIGs or ID's

Edit: I am on Petzl's site trying to find the reference, but I realized that you put Grillion, you would not want to use that for a number of reasons, first of all because of the instructions, 2 its designed to work on a lanyard, 3 because it is not spring loaded like the GriGriII. It's not made for belaying...

you guys tell me, those were my first thoughts. I could be wrong.

Edit 2: http://www.petzl.com/files/all/technical-notice/Sport/D14-GRIGRI2.pdf

check out image 6 the image shows the "NO" on the bolt, which I would say is the same thing as an anchor around a tree.

also the rating is between a 8.9 and 11mm rope... so that limits you to only a few lines, non of which are approved by ANSI for working... which needs to be at least 11mm

again, same as my first edit, let me know if I am wrong...

Hmmmm, Well, I have been using the GriGri 2 in my basal anchor for a while now. I believe it is even suggested in some supply catalog? Sherrill maybe? Anyway, the Grillion and the Gri Gri are two very different things. Yes, no?

Thanks for the response treedimensions. I have read in the past that the grigri is only to be used on your harness and not as an anchoring system.
But the Grillion isn`t a grigri since it doesn`t have that spring action seatbelt mechanism function which would allow for creeping when loaded and unloaded. The grillion doesn`t `lock` but I haven`t found it to creep like a grigri would do if you were to in the same scenario.
The grillion IS designated as a anchor. see top for EN 795 class B (anchor) and pic 6 on .pdf for anchoring setups.

Thanks for making me dig a little deeper. I`m learning a lot I didn`t know about the grillion.

ooo... good find, I just went right for the GriGri. I was looking at the anchor, and it looks like it is for a horizontal anchor, while using the rope provided. I am assuming that it does not want you too change out the rope... or does Petzl care...

I'm going to send off a quick email to Petzl just to get their opinion on my setup for a vertical anchor. I'm comfortable with having it as an anchor but it's best to get their opinion.

The main difference I see in the way the video shows it as compared to an Arborist base tie is that the climber's actual climbing line is not through the grillon/ gri gri as it would be in most arbo set ups. It's being used in place of the prussic that many of us use to adjust our base anchors.

That is awesome, please post and let us know. I have wanted to use a GriGri for a while now, and this just encouraged me to do the actual research.

I look forward to hearing what they say!

A 2nd generation grillion is the same exact thing as a grigri 1, but with a set screw to keep it shut.

A 1st gen grillion didnt have the flip up handle. Other than that and a set screw there isnt a difference.

There IS a diference between the Grillion and Grigri 1, it ist the spring loaded cam of the Grigri! And it does make a big fifference on some ropes (especially thinner ones) and some uses.

For a basal anchor a Grillon is the better one, for a lanyard as well.
Tha cam on the Grigri "frees" the rope when unloaded.
Thats good for belaying and it doesnt matter on rappel. For the uses above thats no good, altghough it will work in many situations.
