Good Gloves

So, the weather up here in Washington is, well, it's wet.
Our gloves are always nasty and working with wet gloves is only the slightly annoying part. The real problem is the consequences of wet gloves, nasty chapped and peeling hands. My hands shed skin more often than a snake in heat. (not really sure snakes shed their skin in heat, but it sounds good)

Anyways, I've tried many assortments of different gloves. I've found many that reduce the hand peeling, but none have the grip right. Meaning i can wear them for groundie duty but it would be a hazard to climb with them for they have no grip on the rope.

Right now I'm just using basic gardening gloves, Atlas, i think, or similar.

I'm looking for suggestions on good gloves, cheap is good, but price wouldn't matter if they were durable and able to withstand a little rope burn. It's not like this is a big deal, but I'm young, single, and the ladies aren't so eager to go home with the lizard handed man.

I like wonder gloves. What if you just wear a couple different pairs in a day. That's the only advice I can give you.

Like Lieutenant Dan said in forrest gump. Take care of your feet every time you stop change to dry socks.

So change you gloves to a dry pair.

I've been satisfied with these

I think they hold up well for the price and should be way better than climbing with gardening gloves. More durable too. Good for working with ropes, knots and hardware. Harbor freight sells a more heavy duty durable pair in red but they are bulkier in the fingers when it comes to handling ropes and hardware, but still better than cotton or leather. Both perform well imho.

Schroadsie, welcome to the Buzz. Where are you located?

I have just used a couple pairs of Atlas gloves, grey in cold weather, blue in warmer weather. Oly is pretty wet.

Madsen's has them for between $3-4 per pair when bought by the dozen.

Here are the gloves that I use here in Portland in similar wet conditions. http://www.sandersonsafety.com/store/product.cfm?pID=7559414240137F

I haven't found anything that fits as good and is as durable. They also make a high visability winter version that I used last winter and was quite impressed with. Just like any grippy glove though you will end up with wet nasty hands and you have to be careful to avoid burning and shredding the gloves when you run ropes or rappel.

For keeping hands healthy and happy in wet conditions I would suggest buying a good hand salve or lotion to use after work and change your gloves multiple times a day. Coming up with an efficient way to clean and dry wet nasty gear and gloves is also an important part of being an arborist in the Pacific Northwest. I use a wire shelving unit that I spread all of my gear ropes and gloves on and then point a fan turned on low at it. Overnight with just the air motion most everything was dry. Combine with a heat source and most likely everything will be dry.

ICE CREAM Lieutenant Dan! Ice Cream!

yeah, it looks like this is the best option so far. I try to do that, but i don't think about it until i get home and look at my hands.

However, i do think I'm going to pick up a pair of those rope work XT gloves by Youngstown gloves and try em out. Of course now that we're starting to get some sun up here , this issue will probably resolve its self, at least until October.

southsoundtree, thanks for the welcome.

I'm up in Federal. We use the gray thermals in the cold cold and the black ones for normal use. I'm not sure what the difference is between the black and the blue other than color. anyways, Where is Madsen's? I've never heard of it, but if their selling gloves that cheap, I'm in.

I'll be coming to your territory of Olympia for the TCC on the 21st. My first year competing. in fact just got done practicing.

My in laws swear by these glove liners for downhill skiing to keep hands dry and thus warm. They have silver fibers woven through...don't know if that helps wicking or the stink factor. Have no idea how much they are, or if they would last in tree climbing very long. Can just vouch for the dry factor.
Changing out gloves is good. Except for all the stinky ol gloves on the dashboard.

I am not sure about the wet conditions, but I also recommend the Atlas gloves.

I have tried many varieties of the "dipped" gloves and atlas seems to be the best. The reason is because the rubber dipped part on the atlas gloves WEARS off of the gloves, which is desirable. The other dipped gloves that I have tried will PEEL off, this is not desirable. When they start to peel off they interfere with work and are not useful anymore (short lifespan). My atlas gloves have not PEELED off, which makes them last a lot longer. Another good brand is Ninja Flex. They will WEAR off as well, just like the Atlas gloves, but they are lighter weight. The only think I don't like is that the only color is red. Both are solid gloves.

I should mention that although the atlas gloves are the best for durability, they don't fit me that well. I have size large hands and I have longer fingers. The pinky on the large size gloves is about 1 1/2" long. What person who wears large size gloves has a pinky that is only 1 1/2" long? I'm guessing not many. Then if I try the XL gloves there is excess material flapping off the ends of my finger tips. Ugh.

Anyhow, even with the uncomfortable fit, I still like them best so far.

Centralia, WA.

Don't know about mail order and shipping. Being in WA State, you will get charged sales tax and shipping.

It is a large supply shop. They are geared toward logging more than arborists, but carry a bunch of gear, sell Stihl and Husky, have clothing, boots, etc. They have some New Tribe harnesses (forget which model and size) on their clearance table for $200 right now.
