I climb srt on 7/16” lava. Those first few feet are always a pain either you have someone pull down your fall line as weight or you pull the rope through your foot ascender by hand.

How do you guys get things started more smoothly?

Thanks

tie sumpin sorta heavy to the rope

After you figure it out it's easy every time, just takes some practice. I have never had to tie a weight on the tail. If the spring is too tight though, that can be a gear problem not technique.

Never tried it but I read a tip about bringing the rope under and up around the other side of ur foot and pulling it up with ur hands as u first get going

I just place something heavyish on the rope that I can yank off after I have some rope weight. If you have a groundie it's a non issue just ask him/her to hold yer rope for a sec. At that point they usually are playing pocket pool anyways?

I second the throwbag hung on the tail. Works great and I can pull it up later if I need the throwbag up in the tree to advance the TIP. (And one less thing hanging on the saddle). I have also used the trick mentioned above, of holding the tail of the rope in my hand, looped under my foot, and pulling it through the foot ascender that way til I gain some height.

I like the throw bag. I also use the saw method. When you have weight on the line you can fly up the rope. I don't like it when people are under me when I go up. I am always paranoid that I will drop something.

Likewise, I train people to stay out from under me, amap.

I prefer to use free, inanimate objects more than paid employees who should be in the middle of something that they will have to break away from, and get back into the groove of.

I use nothing..... I hook up my chestie and footy then do 3 sit/stands up the rope.....connect SAKA mini and off to the races.....all that weighting the line is unecessary....an OG pantin likes less weight than the CT. But both are great products....SAKA mini with doubled bungee is the ticket...thank me later.

I think that the foot ascenders with rollers are supposed to help - just what I've heard. The hanging stuff trick doesn't work well for me since there is typically some slack that sends it to the ground, or it doesn't slack enough and I'm trying to highstep my ascender on to the rope. Awkward af. Might work better if the weight was on a hitch, but then you're adding another minute to dink around with that...

I have the ground guy pull my tail, or just use my hand for the first few.

I jump my slack out so im off the ground then attach knee and then og pantin so as soon as i stand knee is stretched and im already 2 feet off ground 2 or 3 short steps and its off. Levi is right u gotta get the motions down. Ive only used a cmi once and the body is large on that may be causing drag. I do have the issue with a ct so its 2 to 3 footies like swing then knee goes on. OG pantin FTW fo real.

I use nothing or my saw.. if it’s a long climb I will use the saw, as once I get into the limbs of a conifer the weight will make the rope fall though the hitch like butta just free climb up to the top and work your way back down.

I hold the rope redirected around my left foot.

Foot ascender on rt foot, DIY SAKA on left leg. The SAKA tends up the rope easily cause the right foot is holding the rope taut from below [the SAKA], with me still? Well just redirect the rope up to your hands and the same thing happens for the foot ascender; the redirect [around left foot] applies the tension for the right foot ascender to tend up the taut line effortlessly.

Unless you're climbing hands free with a chest roller (I'm not) you're not doing any extra work... You've already got a strand of rope in your hand what's one more for 3-5 steps and you're done anyway.

Climbing saw. I take a bight just below crotch level, pass it under the handle and cinch it onto the chain break. It will usually keep the saw off the ground and give me enough space to clip in my foot ascender once all the slack is taken out of the line. As already mentioned you saw will be ready to pull up once you reach the working height.
